I don't think anyone can predict fish behaviour, it depends on the fish. Having said that, at 6cm they aren't large fish and small Rainbowfish aren't known for eating shrimp. I think you'll be ok, but you can only try it and see what happens. I've never kept them though.

    C. Adolfi

As long as the gravel is fine enough and not sharp or anything, then they'll be fine. I'm pretty sure they'll be okay with those rainbows too.

    What do you feed Corydoras?

Thanks for the advice guys! i have seen those two sites. I've got some TetraMin, TetraPrima and a bunch of other foods, micro pellets, micro wafers, tetra crisps, algae wafers. I'll also get some of the above that I linked.

    What do you feed Corydoras?

Ok, so something like this? http://www.aquaessentials.co.uk/index.p ... ts_id=1782 Thanks for the advice, I'll probably get Bronze to start off with, they seem the easiest to keep.

    What do you feed Corydoras?

I've never kept Cories, and want to get some this weekend. Having never kept them (or any bottom-feeder for that matter) I'm not too sure on what to feed them! Could anyone who has eperience with Cories recommend a food for them? Something that AE sell would be good. :D

I doube it, I think they're too small and those snails have thicker shells.

    stocking levels?

I think a comfortable shoal for this tank would be 20 fish around 5cm. For the larger fish, I don't know about Silver Dollars. You might have problems with the Angelfish/Tetras if you go for that option but have you thought about a Dwarf Cichlid? Something like Rams or Apistos.

Ok, maybe I should have re-phrased what I said, I didn't mean to give misleading advice if that's how it seemed. ;)
  9. T

Ok need help fast somethings really not right :(

Just to clarify, I wasn't suggesting you just buy some random treatment, dose it and hope that it works. That's why I said I wasn't really sure what to do and to go to Maidenhead for further advice on that.
  10. T

Ok need help fast somethings really not right :(

I think the best thing to do would be to dose something to help the little guys out. You might also want to do a water change. MA are usually quite helpful and can advise you on what the best product would be to use. ;)
  11. T

Ok need help fast somethings really not right :(

Do you have any sort of treatments at all that you could dose? If you inject CO2, is that looking ok? If your tank is open-top then you might have sprayed deoderant near the tank or something and that has effected it. Either way, I don't really know what to do but I thought I'd help out anyway...

    Timid Rummynoses

In the hundreds, you don't have anything to worry about unless you get too overpopulated.
  13. T

    Timid Rummynoses

The way I work it out, is if you're dealing with fish such as Tetras, Rasbras etc then 1cm of fish per 1l of water. So... (approx) 1 Platy = 5cm 1 Silvertip Tetra = 5cm 6 Rummynose Tetra = 5cm each = 30cm 6 Neon Blue Tetras = 5cm each = 30cm = around 70cm = 70l so you've got a bit of room...

    Not at all. ;)

    Pigmy Corys

I echo the more mid-water than bottom. I've also heard that they can be more timid and prefer to be in larger shoals.

    Otocinclus death.

jumping fish help. quick reply needed.

I think you'll be fine overall. The WCMM might jump a little, as might the Barbs and Platies but they're not known by any means to be prolific jumpers, just once in a blue moon. As Steve said, Apple snails do exit the water to breed. I've never kept them and don't know that much about them...

Just to throw my two pence in regarding experience: I had six of these, not for very long. A few months tops. They were nice fish, I never saw them being aggressive though. They would have some squabbles between themselves, but that's it. If anything, they were timid. They used to swim very...

    Apisto/s in 30l

I have a 30l tank and am thinking of stocking ideas. There's currently a small shoal of Ember Tetras, so not full stocking by any means. It's densely planted in a 'jungle' style, lots of cover. The approx measurements of the tank are 30x30x30, or thereabouts. Would it be possible to keep one...

    Cherry Barbs & Stock Levels

Re: Cherry Barbs I've never kept them but they're really nice fish. They get to about 5cm and breed easily. The males tend to set up territories but it's nothing too aggresive.

That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.

I agree about the fish suggestions. I'd also say to just get six of one type of Cory, both to be fair to the fish and aesthetically etc.

Could someone advise me on discus...?

angelfish would be a good alternatie, not as colourful but you can keep less of them and in a smaller tank.
  35. T

Could someone advise me on discus...?

i'm not a discus expert by any means, but i do know that they are quite social fish so keeping one wouldn't really be fair. i don't think keeping one of any fish is fair to be honest, unless it is required. you then need to think about your tank size... 125l isn't that big. i'm sure someone will...

Breeding Celestial Pearl Danio (Danio margaritatus)

i think setting up a larger setup would be better. that way, you can cram it full ow moss, dump all the cpd's in there and let them spawn naturally so that none of the other fish can eat the eggs, and there'll be extra cover because its a spawning tank. it'll also probably be easier because...

  38. T

Breeding Celestial Pearl Danio (Danio margaritatus)

i think the best thing to do is experiment for yourself and see what works for you. it's good to follow advice though, but at the end of the day each fish is different. i know what you mean about looking out for eggs, though. just little small round white things i guess
  39. T

what a shame... are you sure you need to use two males? still feeding live food?
  40. T

Is it fine to keep a single oto with no chums?

i don't think an otto is suitable for a 10l to be honest with you. 10l is nothing, and although ottos aren't exactly big fish, they're not the smallest of things. they are also very social fish, so keeping one or even two on their own wouldn't be fair, especially in such a small tank.
  41. T

Breeding Celestial Pearl Danio (Danio margaritatus)

Hmm... I'e never actually bred fish like this in practise, but have read a lot about it. I'm not sure how large or visible the eggs will be if/when they are laid, but I think the most obvious way to tell if it's all gone to plan is when the female is smaller in size.

Red Eye Tetras - anyone keep them

I know Mark (saintly) has kept them and seems to have had good experiences with them. They are one of th emore aggresive tetras, so keep in good sized groups with no small, long-finned etc fish such as Guppies. Like jay said, they also grow quite large for a tetra (about 7-8cm maybe) so a tank...

    Botia Dario and Botia Stiata

I'm not sure about your other questions, but I find with fish and behaviour it's a kind of balancing act. Bosemani Rainbow fry maybe!?!?!?

They'll most likely get eaten then... In saying that, I have had Guppy fry survive with just a little bit of plant cover/surface cover in a tank with Danios, Gouramis and such. I personally wouldn't put them in there yet even though they are eating the shrimp. You might be able to just setup...

  55. T

    Silver Hatchets

I would say the best thing to do is just have the two species - more Cardinals though because they tend to spread out mroe and then have fewer Rummies and they'll form a tight shoal and swim amoungst the Cardinals.
  56. T

    Silver Hatchets

What do you mean Danios are too similar in character to Rummy-nose Tetras? If anything, I'd say Harlequins are more similar, Harlequins tend to stick more to the middle strata of the water column, whereas Danios at the top.
  57. T

    Aggressive Female Emperor Tetra

I think this can be a common thing, especially amoungs small groups of tetras. The five or so neons in my sister's tank are always having a go at each other when I look in there. How big is the tank? I would make sure you have plenty of hiding places, and you could also add a few more o stir...
  58. T

    Timid Rummynoses

I agree you should give them time to settle in, they'll come out when they're ready. I know this sounds really weird, but I find when it comes to being timid it's a bit of a balancing act with fish. Sometimes if you add a few fish, take some away, add another species (even to take out again)...
  59. T

Breeding Celestial Pearl Danio (Danio margaritatus)

This should be interesting! You might want to add some more cover to the tank, as the museum advised. It looks pretty open at the moment. I have heard that when breeding fish like this Cabomba works well too, you might also want to use some floating plants.

Are you using one of those little opti-whites from Aqua Essentials? You might not even need a heater to be honest. CPD's don't need their water that hot to begin with, and it's such a small tank that it'll probably be warm enough with the tank light on and the room heat. You should probably...

    Snail eating fish

There's a million topics on UKAPS about this, you could have searched the forums first. If you're snails aren't under control, then you're probably feeding your fish too much. Botia Strata seems to be the best choice as a snail-eating fish. I've also heard that Dwarf Puffers will eat snails...

    Substrate damaging cory barbels?

I would say it's the stuff below the sand, whatever it is. I think both of those need to be capped because they are toxic or something, but I doubt that could make a Cory loose a barbel. Just add another inch of sand maybe? I've never kept Corys but I doubt they can dig that far.

ember tetras and golden rams / now angelfish and algae eater

Re: ember tetras and golden rams yeah, both would be okay because they are more than 5cm in length. ember tetras are about 3cm fully grown, and angels view anything that size as food.
  80. T

im worried about the angels behaviour

I'm assuming your tank is cycled? Any fish that you buy and put into your tank will be scared and stressed. They've just been put into a cramped plasic bag and dumped in a strange tank with different water parameters. Just make sure you have plenty of hiding places and keep the lights off...
  81. T

ember tetras and golden rams / now angelfish and algae eater

Re: ember tetras and golden rams Yeah, embers will soon be food as far as angels are concerned. Anything above 5cm will be okay. Don't get rams. You are already pushing it a bit with four angels, so adding another pair of rams wouldn't be a good idea.
  82. T

ember tetras and golden rams / now angelfish and algae eater

Re: ember tetras and golden rams Yeah, I just meant 20 as a good minimum. :D 30/40 is better because Embers are very nervous. I would say put them in the tank first so that they are confident before adding the Rams.
  84. T

ember tetras and golden rams / now angelfish and algae eater

Re: ember tetras and golden rams I don't see why not. Just have plenty of hiding places, which there will be if it's a planted tank. Also make sure you get a decent amount of embers, I'd say about 20 or so.
  85. T

    Breeding angels in community? 125ltr

Yeah, I secomd that RE: the angels. Cories sounds good too. I would also get some medium sized fish, but make sure they are above 5cm or they'll soon be food when the angels grow up. A shoal of about 10-15 Cardinals, Rummynoses, Bleeding Hearts etc.
  86. T

    Ruby Tetra

I've learned a couple of techniques in feeding timid fish: 1. Crush a pinch of flakes into a small pot. 2 Add about 20ml of water or so. 3 Suck up the stuff with a syringe. 4 Syringe it in the general direction of the fish. This always seems to work for me. :D
  87. T

    Ruby Tetra

I would normally say try increasing the shoal but 20 is ample. How long ago did you get them? The only other thing that I can think of is the lighting, but looks like you've got that covered. There's pretty mixed opinions on Harlequins. Some people say they don't shoal at all, and other say they shoal brilliantly. Either way, I will still consider them. I think they will go great with the 'feel' of the scape I have in mind, although they aren't one of my favourite fish.
