Mine's quieter than my eheim was, but that needed a new impeller. It's certainly got a motor hum too it, but I don't notice too much as it's in the utility.

I do recharge it in RO water. Can't remember where someone told me that it recharges better in soft water, and i have an RO unit.

I have a similar green foam tube over my eheim 2213 intake on my smaller tank. Well I did until I took that tank down recently. It did gather mulm and fur up eventually, but it was easy enough to pull off and give a squeeze to to clear it out.

Last time I looked Hagen had pulled the aquaclear range off the UK market. Not really sure why.
