The water in one of my tanks is mostly rainwater mixed with some tap. The shrimp have done ok but I did buy some of this a while back just in case. It’s made no difference though as far as I can tell.
I use a Habistat on my tanks. They say you can’t do it and it doesn’t work etc but it does. These type of things were popular as under tank heaters years ago but fell out of use for some reason.

Mine breed like mad but I only get about 1-2% of the black and red ones. The rest are boring brown ones. I could either separate or cull but I don’t have a spare tank and I’m not into mass murder! :p
I bought some Amano’s quite some time ago and they’re still going strong. How long do they live? If I didn’t know better I’d think they’re breeding but I understand this isn’t possible. The Cherries in both tanks are certainly multiplying.
I mentioned to my wife that I’d like to get some Kale to feed the shrimps. We aren’t growing any Kale at the moment but she did suggest the leaves of some Purple Brussels we have in the garden. Blanched and placed in the tank the shrimps went mad for it. I happened to leave the excess blanched...
I transferred some juvenile shrimp over to a new 60L Nano a little while back and I’ve just noticed that three of them are Berried. They aren’t even fully grown yet, is this normal?
I put some Sera Biostart in my 60L a little while ago as it came with the filter. There are some mosses and small Anubias in the tank and after a couple of weeks I tentatively started adding shrimp and they all seem ok.
Amanos seem pretty hardy so I’d give 5 a try. You could have quite a large number in a 200L tank but it depends ultimately how much other stock you intend to put in there. To be honest Amanos do a good job at clean up but they’re a bit boring. I only had a few in my tank before adding some...
Unless you’re getting a particularly good price for 15 I’d buy just 5 instead and see how they get on. If they’re all still ok after a week or so I’d buy another 10.
I admit I’ve had a fatality before but I open the bag and float it in the tank and as jameson does I add a small amount of tank water at intervals over about an hour before adding them to the tank. I used to do this with fish as well many years ago and never had any problems at all.
I filled a new tank a while back and just recently introduced a few shrimp from my other tank. I was a initially a little disappointed at only having bogwood to put in the new tank but in hindsight it’s been great for the shrimps. Whilst there are some plants in the tank that had some algae on...
My shrimps didn’t touch the nettles I put in the tank. I also tried spinach and cucumber but they didn’t like that either. They do like cooked frozen peas though. I’ve got lots of cherries and a couple of amano’s and it’s really funny watching an amano grabbing half a pea and walking off with it!
I’m primarily using rainwater for my 37 Litre Nano although I do top up occasionally with tap water. When I do a water change it’s very rarely more than about 10%. I don’t use any water conditioners. I’m giving the tank a shot of Tropica Specialised Nutrition once a week or so. My Cherries are...
I’ve got lots of baby shrimp in my tank and they seem to be doing well on Bio Tase and Shrimp King Baby. The adults get small bits of Spirulina wafer from time to time as well. I’m pretty sure some of my floating plants are being munched as well though!
That’s what I’ve used. It could still look better but what can you do? I liked the stainless steel pipes I bought but the my Cherries decided to have sex and now I’ve got babies all over the place!
The shrimps do seem to be keeping the foam clean though ...
I’ve seen some young shrimp foraging on the intake sponge without any problems so although ugly it seems to be doing its job quite well. It will be interesting to see how dirty it is when I take it out to clean it. A second orange female is now berried as well so more young ones on the way.
I’ve been keeping a look out for any babies and I’ve seen nothing until yesterday when I saw one about 2-3mm long feeding near the bottom. Hopefully a few more have made it.
The makeshift sponge I’ve had to put on the inlet is not exactly attractive so I’d like to sort out a more aesthetic solution. The intake slots on my stainless inlet cover an area that’s maybe 90mm top to bottom. This means that most of the stainless mesh covers I’ve seen are simply too short to...
Yes I will do David, thanks. I’ll pop some into the tank as soon as it arrives. I got it from ProShrimp on eBay so it should get here soon, they’re very good at getting stuff out quickly.
There’s plenty of Moss in there and also three or four Moss balls. The adults can often be seen upside down grazing on some floating plants.
I will have a look at the Bacter AE, thanks.
I put some cherries in my tank about three weeks ago and I’ve just noticed one of them is berried. I fitted a new stainless inlet and outlet a while back and the inlet slots are more than big enough for any baby shrimps to get sucked up. Luckily I had some spare foam so I’ve managed to cut off a...
Thanks for the tip Steve. I put half a boiled pea in the tank and within seconds one of the Amanos had picked it up and walked off with it. A few seconds later and they were fighting over it so I put another half in.
I’ve got a few Amano’s and a few cherries. Funnily enough I saw a yellow cherry munching on some green filamentous algae this evening, hope he continues!
I've installed half a dozen shrimp in my tank to help with cleanup. They’re doing an excellent job of cleaning the bogwood but don’t much like green algae for some reason. The bogwood’s going to be pretty clean soon so I thought I best offer them something else. I bought some Algae wafers from...
I’ve added four Amano to my 37 Litre Nano to try and help with Algae. They haven’t touched any of the Algae but seem happy grazing on a large piece of bogwood. As I rarely seem to see all four at a time and they seem happy with the tank conditions I plan to add some more soon. Two questions I...
I read an article saying they can and do kill shrimp, particularly young ones.
I had them in my tank and as I only had plants I used increasingly large doses of Panacur but it didn’t work. I had to strip the tank down.
I suspect mine came on plants from the LFS.
I can’t help thinking that Electricity should kill most things if it’s applied in the right way at a suitable voltage? Surely someone has done some research into this sort of thing?
I had a 50 gallon aquarium for many years and never had anything like that. Move on several house moves later and I set up a 35 Litre Nano and got planaria in it. Everything I tried failed so I had to strip the tank down in the end. Horrible looking things. There’s an article in the spring PFK...
