Slow & Steady - First tank!

Couple of days of no lights, and a couple of days of only dosing co2 seems to have done the trick for the algae. I’ve just got 4 more amanos (6 in total) so hopefully everything will be sparkling now!

What do you feed your bettas?

Thank you for all your suggestions! I’d already bought some fluval bug bites which he seems to like, gave him some daphnia which he loved! I’ll give the ELOS a try next, the size looks ideal!

What do you feed your bettas?

Mine seems to hate anything in pellet form, he grabs it then spits it back out, tried two different foods now. What can i feed him instead?

Slow & Steady - First tank!

Tank update: I’m getting a bit of algae, especially on the left side. It’s my own fault because I had a week or so of not being consistant with the lights or ferts/co2, but what can I do to improve it? I don’t want the algae taking over!! I took the pump out today to turn the flow down a...

    Bettas & flow

I believe he's a Plakat, he definitely has zero trouble swimming even in the strongest current

Slow & Steady - First tank!

Haha, not quite, he was named after Hugo Lloris!

    Bettas & flow

Ok I’ll keep an eye on him for now, he’s swimming all over even in the strongest flow at the moment

    Bettas & flow

Yesterday I got my first Betta! He’s in a planted fluval spec v. Currently I have the pump on the highest setting, but I have angled it up and at the front glass. The Betta seems ok with his, most of the tank is low flow with just the top front fast, he’s even been swimming into the flow. My...

Slow & Steady - First tank!

So the blue jellies have vanished, one I saw in the filter compartment today, one died from a parasite :( the two amanos are still going strong though. I also picked up a betta today, made the mistake of “just having a look” in a fish shop and saw this gorgeous guy, I couldn’t resist:

Anyone ever had Dinoflagellates and ellobiopsids?

i think one of my shrimp has this :( is there any treatment that works?
  14. Z

Slow & Steady - First tank!

Blue jellies are in :) the amanos are wondering who the heck these little blue guys are!! I have to say I think my amanos are pretty stunning too!

Slow & Steady - First tank!

2 months in I’ve changed up the rigt back corner as I’ve not been happy with how it’s looking. Suggestions for a plant for that corner will be gratefully received!! The two amanos are happy so far and are doing a great job. I’m hoping to get some more shrimp at the end of the month, and fish...

Slow & Steady - First tank!

2 weeks after planting, I’m pleased with the growth on A.reineckii and Siamensis. I think they’ve grown pretty well for a low tech! The H.tenellum is starting to bounce back too :)
  26. Z

Slow & Steady - First tank!

I’ve had the pump agitating the surface all week and it’s much better, the floating plants make it difficult to remove with kitchen roll. I had to take them all out and wash them last week!
  27. Z

Slow & Steady - First tank!

One week in, put the ludwigia palustris in and I’m a lot happier with it, I think the scale is much better. Hopefully in a few weeks I can get some shrimp!
  28. Z

Slow & Steady - First tank!

So a little midweek update 4 days on from planting. First off does anyone have any tips for dealing with this surface scum? I’m pretty sure it’s being caused by the slime coming out of the wood: And plant updates, the Alternanthera reineckii 'mini' is taking off nicely: As is the...

Slow & Steady - First tank!

I’m doing 0.5ml per day which is roughly right- the recommended dosing is 1ml per 50litres
  31. Z

Slow & Steady - First tank!

Interesting stuff! I’m dosing liquid co2 at the moment though I am debating upping the dose while the tank has no critters in, at the moment I do 0.5ml per day

Slow & Steady - First tank!

I’ve got training chopsticks! They work pretty well for the 1-2-grow plants! Ok when I do a water change this weekend I’ll sort it out. Thank you again alto :)
  33. Z

Slow & Steady - First tank!

Thank you alto! I’ve not got any extra soil to add, i need to push the soil where the A mini is back, so I’d need to pull it up completely then replant it, do you think it would be too much disruption to do it a week after I first planted it? I’ll definitely switch out the ludwigia and I’ll...

Slow & Steady - First tank!

Has anyone got any thoughts on swapping the Ludwigia repens rubin for Ludwigia palustris? Does it have smaller leaves?
  35. Z

Slow & Steady - First tank!

Considering swapping out the Ludwigia repens rubin for Ludwigia palustris, the leaves are just much bigger than I realised!! I've read that the palustris is smaller, opinions are needed and welcomed!! I also need to bank the soil up more at the back on the left, I thought I had done this but...

Slow & Steady - First tank!

I think the buce at the top may end up getting too much light to be happy, but we'll see! I'm excited to see how it grows in! I don't think we'll make an aquascaper out of me yet, my gluing was pretty bad :woot:

Slow & Steady - First tank!

No daylight - we have french doors but keep the curtains closed during the day, plus it's north facing and the tank is on the opposite side of the room, I'll try 5 and see how I get on :) Yeah I didn't 100% agree with the logic of it (unless it was for reducing flow) but I may try the heater in...

Slow & Steady - First tank!

I’m going to, it’s like this from where I was weighing it down, I’m going to drain it right down and move the wood/fiddle with the substrate before I plant it. I’m going for 4ish hours photo period to start with, and I’ve got the easy carbo ready to go :) The heater I got does actually fit in...

Slow & Steady - First tank!

Cleaned the slime off the wood and made a bit of a mess, but the wood seems to already be water logged which was much faster than I expected. I've ordered an Aquel Easy Heater since I'm not fussed about having it in the pump compartment (I feel iffy about it being pressed up against the...

    Filter cycling?

Ok, so the choices are planted with no ammonia added or bare with ammonia added? I may just go for planted and see how we go, I'm not fussed about waiting, I was expecting to wait a good few months to get the filter ready! Sadly my tank was supposed to be in today but I'm doubtful it'll get to...

  52. Z

    Filter cycling?

I've just ordered my tank - Fluval Spec V, I'm intending to wait until mid this month - next month to get the substrate and plants, is it possible to get my filter cycling in the mean time? What is the best method? (Please feel free to point me at existing threads if they're out there)
  53. Z

    How much substrate?

    Great, thank you!!
  54. Z

    How much substrate?

I'm wanting to use tropica aquarium soil in a fluval spec V, I'm not sure whether to get the 1.25kg or 3kg bag. I tried using an online calculator but it said I needed 12kg

Superfish home 40/60 or Dennerle Scapers Tank?

Yeah I must admit I quite like the rounded corners! The thing that puts me off the superfish is the massive filter block, I don't want a huge external filter either which is also why the dennerle appeals to me.
  63. Z

Superfish home 40/60 or Dennerle Scapers Tank?

    Anyone have Copper Harlequin Rasboras?

It's been running for about 2 years, I don't know how it was cycled it was done before I started. I hadn't realised I could ask the shop to do that!! They seem very happy already, the 2 female cherry barbs we already had are shoaling with them as well!

    Anyone have Copper Harlequin Rasboras?

It's looking like we've got 3 males and 2 females at the moment, just need to figure out how I could store more overnight, the tank is at work, we snuck out at lunch to get them today but it was an hour round trip so don't really want to do it again!

I'm thinking of hiding my filter on the right side sort of behind the background (thinking of having it go 3/4 across the back, then having a 1/4 panel sat further forward that the filter is behind) hope that makes sense, so from the front the background would look solid but from the sides you'd...
