Thanks for the input guys, will adjust my plans accordingly.

    Dry Start after Dark Start

Hey everyone, So, I'm making preparations for a new aquarium, which will be a Juwel Rio 240. It will be a high tech setup, even though I will stick with the LED lamps that come with the aquarium for now (about 7000 lumen, or about 28 lumen per liter). But CO2 injection with a solenoid, and all...

    (Free) Liquid Tension Experiment

So, yeah, I definitely ordered waaay too many plants. LOL Does give the immediate jungle vibe, but still. Had a bit of a disaster, well, two actually. First one was with the superglue. Thought I was being smart using the type that comes with a little brush, only for the brush to break like five...

    (Free) Liquid Tension Experiment

Only the buce, the java moss, and the fluitans are in vitro. Epiphytes should be fine anyway, most will be close to or above the water level from day one.

    (Free) Liquid Tension Experiment

I just checked; I ordered 20 pots of plants. I might have a problem LOL

I made sure to add the word "maybe" in there. LOL

    (Free) Liquid Tension Experiment

It's what I had laying around. Did some experiments with this kind of light setup (low Kelvin) years ago, and based on that, it should work.
  10. Vinkenoog1977

    (Free) Liquid Tension Experiment

I do definitely want some tropical fish in there, so I will need the heater. And the only reson for the pump is to circulate the water in order to get to a stable temp for the fauna.

    (Free) Liquid Tension Experiment

So, the last time I had an aquarium was back in 2016. Well, "an"; thirteen in all. Moved house earlier this year, and have been planning a new, large, aquarium (I mostly had nano tanks before), a Juwel Rio 240. As I was talking to an acquaintance in the dog park, I mentioned this in passing...

    Journal First Ever Pond

Well, after two days of nothing but rain, which coincided with the plants arriving, leading to me being drenched for two days straight, the plants are all in, managed to get everything clean again, so time for some new pics! I'm actually seeing quite a bit of growth, for the time of year; the...

    Journal First Ever Pond

Hey guys, Wondering if someone could help me out. I recently started up my first ever pond, of course way too late in the season, but it's a small garden, and this was the only chance I had to dig one out, before all the new planting arrives. Anyway, it's absolutely tiny, compared to some of...

Aquarium/Vivarium/Terrarium Air Humidifier, smoke on the water..

Found some donut shaped floating ones, look pretty inconspicuous, so I'll put an order in for two, for both of my open tops with emersed growth, bit more expensive at ~ 10 Euros, but well worth it if I can finally ditch the spray bottle routine!
  18. Vinkenoog1977

Unidentified black and clear unwanted visitor - any ideas?

Fungus would be my guess. Spot-treat with liquid CO2 for a couple a days (use a syringe on the affected spots, shut off the fiter for 10 minutes), and should be gone forever. I almost always get some white/ black/ green fungus-type stuff on new wood, and liquid CO2 has not failed me once.

Thanks Wisey! My EI mix is as follows (for 250 ml. bottles): Macro: 3 tbsp MgSO4 2 tbsp KNO3 0,5 tbsp KH2PO4 Micro: 1,5 tbsp trace mix 2,5 tbsp KSO4 And mix with demineralised water. Then I dose 0,5 ml. per 10 ltr. macro, and 1 ml. per 10 ltr. micro on alternating days.

Spray bar or no spray bar for best CO2 distribution?

For me, it's a bit of a case of what the situation requires. If you're using a diffusor, I'd use a spraybar for the best circulation of CO2, BUT I'd advise using 2, or more, diffusors, depending on the length of the tank, spaced equally underneath the spraybar, AND go for an oversized filter...

    Stupid Heat Wave

What about topping off with icecubes? One cube per 25 liter can drop the temp by a degree or 3-4 for a couple of hours. Right now, my tanks are all around 26 C, not too worried yet. Saturday might be a doozy though, they're predicting 36 C here then.
  27. Vinkenoog1977

    800 ltr

This is a pretty decent calculator. If you're going to be dosing EI, there is no need for any other substrate, and even inert fine gravel would do just as well, even with crypts and swords. Not familiar with that particular substrate, so can't comment on it's planting properties.
  28. Vinkenoog1977

    WC query

Should be fine, especially with the newer types of boilers and general plumbing. With older setups, there can be copper issues. If you want to be on the safe side, you can use a water boiler/ electric kettle, and mix with the cold tap water to get the desired temperature.

So, no luck with some different stone, but luckily I still had some rather "rough" Ardennes Grey in my basement, plus some more in one of my 25L cubes which are waiting for a rescape, so I gutted that one, used some elbow grease to get some of the green algae of it, and Bob was once again my...

Thanks guys! Will be hunting for other stone this morning, and with the additional wood coming in, it should alter the scape significantly. Bio CO2 - How to stop the foaming?

Well, I found the solution, which has helped my CO2 in more ways than one. By adding a couple if drops of plant fertilizer (the regular stuff used for houseplants), the foaming is nearly non-existent, even when used straight away (so no more 24-36 hour waiting period). I have also found that the...

    Air pump

No way an airpump will be able to build up enough pressure to work its way through a ceramic diffusor. The smallest bubbles I've been able to produce via an air pump, is with the adjustable Eheim O2 diffusors, but closed too far, nothing at all. It's a definite pressure thing. And I personally...

    120l - which couple of cichclids ?

I'd try soms Rams, Kribs can indeed be a nightmare with smaller plants, and Cacts are ferocious hunters; my male goes after adult guppies for a snack, and my shrimp have all gone awol. Rams are the more chill of the dwarf cichlids in my experience, but only couples, no harems, cause one female...

Question about the Dry Start Method

You could try it like this, initial water level right at the level of the substrate at the front, that should cause some "collapse" of the substrate. Just top it of every other day by misting the tank. Plus, the plant roots could/ should be able to keep things together, especially if you add...

Bio CO2 - How to stop the foaming?

LOL Yeah, I know that, have been thinking about rigging something up. They are in a sort of caddy I made, and I might...

Bio CO2 - How to stop the foaming?

Hey guys, I've been using bio CO2 to some great results. However, the foaming on startup has been giving me some issues. Let me explain. I use the jello-method, i.e., for a 1 liter bottle, I mix 400 ml. of water with 200 gr. of sugar, bring that to the boil, then I add 3 gelatine leaves soaked...

Upgrading to larger tank - Recommendations?

The Juwel ones are a special kind of horrid I have to say. Here is mine on the afforementioned IKEA cabinet. And the insert made of 18 mm. MDF.
  48. Vinkenoog1977

Upgrading to larger tank - Recommendations?

Juwel Lido 120 seems to fit your bill, horrible cabinet though, but you could always use an IKEA BESTA cabinet, and add an inner shell out of 18 mm. MDF.

Really a lovely tank mate, well done! As James said, sand can work just as well as any other substrate or gravel, as long as you fert the water column (via EI or another method). It kind of depends, if I'm using the hardscape to define the look, such as in an Iwagumi, or if I'm using the hardscape to grow plants on (ferns, anubias, moss) hence defining the scape, I keep going back andd forth with the hardscape till I get it just right. Other times... Wait, there are no...

I tried an internal on my 45L (Opium Cartel in my sig), but that could not handle it, not by a long way, especially when heavily planted, this becomes an issue. Should you switch to an external, there are a couple of options with DIY CO2. The first would be to attach it to the filter inlet...
