All great tanks folks, the shrimp community is thriving!

    Best 'coldwater' fish?

TBH, I think the fact that they are minnows means that they come from quite fast moving streams and rivers that are high in oxygen and flow. I might be wrong though and someone else could maybe chip in. I personally wouldn't put them in if it meant unhappy fish but it's worth looking into!:)
  3. NanoJames

    Best 'coldwater' fish?

Hi Manrock:wave: If you plant your tank heavily enough, filtration shouldn't be a problem. You would be surprised to find that most 'tropical' fish are very happy in low temperatures. For example, I have 10 Ember Tetras in my Mini M at a temperature of 20 degrees ( unheated) and they are very...

    Shrimp ID

The are just cherry shrimp but in their natural form. They are often a brown colour and won't really get much more exciting unfortunately!:)

Some of the healthiest plants I've ever seen! Good job:)

Suitable LED for low tech setup?

I'm afraid I don't use it personally although I know that Ian Holdich does in his journal: Back to my roots | Page 10 | UK Aquatic Plant Society I think it's just a fairly basic unit hence the price but would most likely be fine for a low tech. Sorry I can't give many answers but I'm sure a bit...

ADA Mini M - CRS Tank

Thanks very much guys! :) Curvball, I really like them too, I had seen them at my LFS for a little while and always fancied some. I don't expect them to get too much brighter than this although I have not fed any live food yet so once I do they could perk up a little. If a dominant male arises...

    Akwarium

Really nice tank! Loving the gourami also, I used to have one that would also take anything it could get for a nest. Even though there wasn't a female in the tank...
  13. NanoJames

ADA Mini M - CRS Tank

Hi everyone Another picture update which I took during and after a water change. Still struggling a little bit with algae but hopefully it won't be for too much longer! The Embers are colouring up really nicely and it looks like I might have a mix of males and females.:) Anyway, here's a few...

ADA Mini M - CRS Tank

Hi Lindy, Pygmy cories still in my other nano, now that I have the Embers I'll maybe try and catch them to put them in in the near future.:) I have just 5 now as I lost one to an unknown cause.:( Got some decent pics of the Embers schooling this morning! Cheers:)
  19. NanoJames

ADA Mini M - CRS Tank

Long overdue update time, I think! This tank had a bad time with algae (mainly Diatoms) but is slowly getting out of it. Plant growth has slowed slightly but still a good rate, considering I don't have any CO2. As could have been predicted, this is not a shrimp only now.... I...

    Clear to Blackwater

Thanks for the heads up! This is only about 3 litres so I'll probably tear up 2-3 oak leaves and just use that. Will need to get more sand and wood at some point too.:)
  21. NanoJames

    Clear to Blackwater

Hi everyone, I've decided to change about my micro tank (which has been posted on here before) as plant growth is slowing down dramatically. I really like the idea of packing it with bogwood and leaves and sand and allowing the water to turn black! I haven't made any changes yet but over this...

Fish for A 20 Liter Tank

OK mate, here is some information I typed and sent Darren. I've just copy and pasted it because I couldn't be bothered typing it all again! To be honest, most would say I neglect my rasbora tank! I find the key for keeping these fish happy is less the volume of water but more how you use...

Fish for A 20 Liter Tank

My Boraras urophthalmoides do very well in my 20 litre. I'd say any of the Boraras species are good for a 20 litre, but be careful of which ones require blackwater and which don't.:)
  26. NanoJames

ADA Mini M - CRS Tank

Interesting point Lindy. They are probably the same size as the CRS so they shouldn't be too intimidated. As for eating babies, I have lots of young shrimp in my holding tank and none have been eaten. I can always take them out if they are bothering them.:) Thanks guys! It's killing me...

    3 Peaks (Nano)

Looks like a good start mate! Very expensive!;) Galaxy rasboras will eat any shrimplets you get. I'd recommend chili or phoenix rasboras, they still shoal but won't eat the shrimplets. Cheers:)

Also fitted a black background!;) I've added more plants since the last pic too, courtesy of Hoggie. Hoping to get my...

  53. NanoJames

    Exposed substrate - Shrimp tank

Ease of feeding is the reason for me! I don't feed any of the fancy £200 per gram stuff and just use algae wafers and if these go underneath plants, it's hard for the shrimp to get to them. It's also easier to see your shrimp in a bare area.:)

    Smallest Tank on UKAPS?

Sorry Andy, I completely missed your reply! Yes this is your HC, it's spread and gained height since these pictures though and is a nice green colour! I did the DSM method to get roots established and dosed liquid carbon for a short while but now this tank never gets dosed. I think the natural...

    Newbie Here!

As Ollie said above I think quite a few people use the John Innes soil. I wouldn't stray to far away from that stuff because, as my test showed, not all soils are useful for fish tanks! In a tank as big as yours, some of the widely used substrates such as ADA Aqua Soil: ADA Aqua Soil Amazonia 9...

    Newbie Here!

Welcome to UKAPS! I would strongly advise staying away from multi-purpose composts. I did a test in a very small tank (without any livestock) with multi-purpose compost capped with gravel and it sent Nitrates sky high! If I was to use it in an actual tank, the result would have been...

    NAtural Jurassic....shaky video p17.

Ohhhh, what a shame! I guess those CRS will need homes. I'd feel sorry for them to not experience my hospitality...;) All tanks are looking good mate. I'd recommend getting a blenny or goby in the reef mate, I've got a tailspot blenny and he's brilliant! Cheers:)

A 'little' box of chocolates, licorice n allsorts - baby chocco fry

Nice one Alastair! It will be hard to top this one in your new tank!;)

  66. NanoJames

    Maidenhair Bank

Thanks very much Ali.:) I would definitely recommend one, it gives a new view of the scape. It's not too expensive either, a pot (2X the size of my portion) was £4 from my local Dobbies. Yes you do need to be careful to keep the roots moist all of the time! Cheers:)
  67. NanoJames

    Maidenhair Bank

Thanks very much for the kind words Tim.:) I just need to get those rasboras breeding now...;) Sorry lads, ImageShack said the picture had been removed! Hopefully this one should work. It's just planted with multi-purpose compost in a bottle which has had the bottom cut off.
  68. NanoJames

    Maidenhair Bank

Here's a few more pictures. I added a Maidenhair fern which seems to be doing well and has inspired me to change the name of this journal! The shrimps are obviously enjoying the oak leaves! Cheers :)

    Limnophila growing outdoors

Nice one! Interesting to see red growth there, you must be getting the optimum amount of sun as I can't see any algae either.

  73. NanoJames

    Easy carpeting plant

In that case, HC is back on the cards mate! The other two are still going to grow a lot faster but you may prefer the look of HC. Or you could get some of each and see which one you like the best!:)
  74. NanoJames

    Easy carpeting plant

I would steer clear of HC at the moment mate, if you're a beginner I'm guessing you won't have the full CO2 set up? I've used both Stauro and Eleocharis and both are great plants. The Staurogyne is definitely quicker growing but a hairgrass carpet looks the bees knees! If you have a...

    Greetings From Lancashire

Welcome to UKAPS! I've got the smaller version of your Arcadia, the 20 litre one.:)
  79. NanoJames

Which Substrate do you use for RCS?

Within reason, cherries can thrive at a lower PH. I wouldn't risk going much below 6.4 - 6.5 for breeding. Molting shouldn't be an issue at that either. You can also get a PH buffer which would mean that if you were worried, you could cancel the Amazonia out and raise the PH a little bit. Don't...

Which Substrate do you use for RCS?

You beat me to it Michael!;)
  82. NanoJames

Which Substrate do you use for RCS?

You shouldn't have too many problems with Red Cherries and PH mate, it's Crystal Reds you want to be more lenient about. My cherries are at about 6.8 PH and they're doing fine. Active substrates are good for buffering the water to what some of the fancier shrimp like so you don't necessarily...

    Oats?

I feed these too and there is no reason to crush them up. Just put a few oats in and they will eat!:)

    'Pretty Stream' - CRS tank

Nice shrimp Nath! They have everything they need in that tank.:)
  93. NanoJames

    Maidenhair Bank

Thanks Michael!:) It certainly makes a change from the super-high-tech tanks on here. I like it as I don't need to be so religious with water changes and maintenance as the plants soak up most waste matter. Cheers
  94. NanoJames

    Maidenhair Bank

Hi everyone:) I took delivery of some nice Hydrocotyle Tripartita from a member on here today and got it in the tank. Hopefully it will find the light and the leaves will start posing for photos!;) I'm also thinking about getting some nicer shrimp with Christmas money (I know I'm a bit early!) I...
  95. NanoJames

    Continuous pruning or not?

There is no reason that I know of to only trim all plants at once. I think most people that do a big trim run a (very) high-tech tank so growth is really quick. I don't trim everything at once personally, and I don't see a problem with doing everything at once! Do whatever suits your maintenance...
  96. NanoJames

Show us your shrimp tank 2013

I'll start the ball rolling mate! It's not a shrimp only but definitely has plenty of shrimp in it.:)

    That explains it then! Haha:lol:
  98. NanoJames

    Maidenhair Bank

Thanks! Fair enough mate, however, bare in mind the fish are about 2cm a time. And there is about 10 plants to every fish in there! My Nitrate test kit doesn't see a problem!;)
  99. NanoJames

    Ians Aqua oak 350

Really nice hardscape there Ian!:) It should look really nice when the plants grow up between the rocks. My only suggestion would be to pile in plants at the back to make a nice background of foliage! Other than that, it looks brilliant! Well done mate.:D
  100. NanoJames

    Maidenhair Bank

What's up Ali?!:) Thanks very much motionless! Very kind of you to say that. It would be nice to change to a slightly bigger tank at Christmas but I will see how the tank is going at that point. I think I would only upgrade to a 30 litre to keep electricity costs down! I would love either one...
