Hi all, I think it is definitely a root, possibly Teak (Tectona grandis) or a Dipterocarp.

If the light coloured wood hasn't been glued on (it probably has) its the remains of a Strangler fig or similar that was growing as an epiphyte.

Never heard of any of them except Teak!....:banghead:.

Hi all,
Never heard of any of them except Teak!
Dipterocarps are the trees that (used to) <"cover Borneo">.

It looks like a root where the heart wood has rotted away leaving rot resistant hard wood. Teak and Dipterocarps have very persistent heart wood. Teak roots are used for furniture etc., and the lowland forest of Borneo is rapidly disappearing so I assume Dipterocarp roots are available from cleared areas etc.

Strangler figs get a mention here: <"The sails"> on pages 2 and 3.

cheers Darrel
