Hi ppl
The tank I recently ripped out and re-planted with wood is still leaking heavy tannins into the water. Since I did this the Hydrocotyle is not doing anything at all either the planted or the floating bit that I put on the wood ...
Could this be due to the light not getting through the dirty water?

Thanks

Mick

Hi mick
Tannins do reduce some of the light entering the tank hence tannin stained tanks usually have zero algae. If it's not heavily stained then I'd not think so but if it is then might be worth upping water changes or adding some good quality activated carbon.(not the little pellets)

It is quite yellow if I'm being honest, I'll do as you suggest and see how I get on Thanks for that . 🙂

I reread Diana Walstad's book the other night and I'd forgotten how much she went on about allelopathy (Wikipedia is your friend here 😉
I wonder a) if much of here conviction was misplaced? b) if tannins and associated compounds could be having some sort of chemical effect on clearwater species beyond simple light blocking?

I should think without any info on new substrate after tank overhaul, that plant's would need time to recover.
Growth could possibly be stunted temporarily?
No mention made as to substrate composistion new or same, or method of feeding(fertilizing).

Yeah I'm assuming everyone is a mind reader sorry!!
Same substrate as before with jbl clay balls and seachem root tabs , Ei fertiliser using standard dosing as per instructions, full co2 indicator is nearly yellow, 2x 54 watt bulbs with reflectors, the tank is 250 litres that's including the 2 canister filters, it's a juwel rio 240

This is the setup!
