Where should I keep my plants before they enter the tank?

Hi all,

I'm kind of rusty in all this, and have been a little too early in buying my plants. My tank is not yet up and running, and won't be for another 2 weeks.

Right now I keep them in whatever I have, close to the window, and change the water every few days. I even add fertelizer and som sparkly water 🙂

But I have no clue whats the best way to keep them happy before entering the tank. Should I do a "dry start", or keep them as I am now? Is artificial light better than direct sunlight?

They are less green now, than when I recieved them, 7 days ago.

Please advice!

Hi
The
St. Repens and the Hellanthium Tennelum would probably be better in a emersed tub till required!
Look in the Emersed forum section for guidance!

If this is the Tropica pot version, submerse is the best "storage" method
If tissue culture (as in Tropica 1-2-Grow), maintain emerse BUT at aquatic nursery's the conditions of humidity & light etc are optimized for the various plant species ...

The Christmas moss was likely kept emerse

Monitor temp, windowsills can heat/cool very quickly

The sparkly water (CO2) is good but use low sodium or sodium free as this can accumulate

I've "stored" various 1-2-grow in tank + Tropica aquarium soil + ~10cm water (above substrate), light was provided by east-facing window & blinds (only morning light is direct), plants did exceptional :wideyed:

Depending on time, I did water changes or none over a few weeks - no fertilizers as I expected soil to leach sufficient given light etc conditions; low water level means relatively high surface area to volume ratio so I didn't add CO2 or pump, even the forgotten tank with lovely green water & delightful green scum had amazingly healthy plants 😳 🙂

Note room was quite cool so despite being 30-45cm from window, tank water remained below 22C (closer to 20C I suspect)
