What is the root length of Monte Carlo?

Hi all,

As the title suggests, I am wondering what the approximate root length of Monte Carlo is. This is to help me determine my substrate depth as I'm using powder type aquasoil and want to slope it at the back without being so deep that I get problems with gas buildup.

Many thanks 🙂

That's a good question. I have seen up to 4cm roots but I don't know what the minimum substrate height should be. I would guess at least 2cm but I am sure others will chime in.

I have seen the roots grow 10cm + in deep ADA soil (roots could be seen down the glass line) but in the same tank it also crept and grew fine on sand only 1cm or so deep. It will grow over rocks / gravel etc, doesn't actually need a soil based substrate.

Well the minimum I would go for is around 25mm, any less is difficult to plant in. MC will do fine in shallow soil either way. When you plant, divide up in to sections about 15mm square or circumference and don't be afraid to bury some leaves, they are more likely to stay put and will soon grow new leaves and spread.

Thanks everyone 🙂 I'll probably go for around 2.5cm at the front then, up to about 6cm at the back in that case
