Trouble with emmersed system and melting

I experimented with an emmersed system using Bacopa caroliniana, and it was a success! I used Miracle-Gro potting mix in plastic containers, and it worked really well. Encouraged by that, I decided to try the same setup with "Brazilian Pennywort" and "Alternanthera Reineckii." I bought some plants online, and since I know they've been propagated emmersed before, I figured the transition would be smooth.

After setting up the new containers, the plants started anchoring themselves, and I even saw new growth in the Pennywort. But after a couple of weeks, they started melting. There hasn’t been any change in temperature or humidity, so I’m wondering if anyone has any ideas on what could be causing this? Could it be due to excessive fertilization, like I’ve seen mentioned in a similar post? Would love to hear any thoughts!

Hi Marzk,

Could be a lot of different things, inclusive too much moisture causing some fungal issues (make sure there's adequate ventilation).Your nutrient suggestion is also a possibility, as potting mixes are usually very variable depending on batch.

If they don't grow back don't give up, try a different mix or different plants.

That makes a lot of sense. I’ve been spraying them daily with fish tank water and closing the lid completely, so it's probably creating too much moisture, like you mentioned.

For some reason, I thought since they survive submerged, overwatering and lack of airflow wouldn’t be an issue, but obviously, that’s not the case. I’ll adjust the setup and make sure they get better airflow.

Appreciate the insight!
