Testing Water Flow

Hi all,

I was just wondering if there is an easy way of testing the water flow in my tank to help me decide if I need a powerhead. Could I add a couple of drops of food colouring for instance?

The tank is 36"x15"x15" 120L with an Aquamanta EFX300 (rated at 1100lph) which seems to give pretty good flow. I have it set up with the spray bar going from right to left. There is movement in all the plants, some a lot more than others.

I'm also concerned my Pearl Gouramis wont like any more flow. They tend to sit in the quieter spots as it is. But if I have dead spots what can I do?

The best way of checking water flow is to look at the plants in the tank. If they are all swaying around gently then you have enough flow.

Hi, do you have good plant growth in all areas of the tank? If you do then I wouldn't worry too much. If you add more flow then you may stress the gouramies out.

Yeah I have very good growth at the back and some growth at the front. I have had a couple of patchy outbreaks of BGA at the front but spot dosing with Easy Carbo cleared it right up and it hasn't come back 2 weeks later. I did tweak the angle of the spray bar at the same time so that may have helped.

Would it be worth moving the spray bar to the back and extending it the length of the tank? Which I imagine will actually reduce the strength of the flow as there is more holes for it to escape through but at the same time make it more even.
