Hi all,
I am looking for a way to improve filtration in my Aquaflow 100 which consists of one black foam cartridge with activated carbon media in the middle of the cartridge.
Which would be the best media to replace the cartridge that came with the filter. I have to replace with a new cartridge each month.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Hi
have a read here and the links included
Regards Konstantin

If that’s the only cartridge in the filter and you’re replacing it monthly, then you will be loosing your entire biological filtration capacity in the filter. Changing it monthly is therefore a nonsense. Just keep it and clean the cartridge in aquarium water every so often (ie when flow reduces noticeably).

Afaik, these budget filters work with proprietary media and not designed to be used with user supplied media. They make money by forcing the owner to replace the cartridge and to lose part of the bacteria colonies in the process. I would suggest you upgrade to a small budget HOB or in-tank filter where you can easily clean the media periodically. This type of filters with closed cartridges are useless and become expensive in the long-run.

Yes I agree with your reply, I have been looking into a in tank filter to replace these awlful cartridges plus taking out the box container that houses the filter and heater. Many Thanks for your input.

I don't know exactly how these filters are constructed, but you might be able to just cut a block of foam to size and put in the filter media housing instead of the proprietary cartridge. If so, that would be the cheapest, easiest and most long lasting solution to the problem.
