Something just occurred to me. When I bought my staurogyne repens I just planted them straight in to my eco complete. They were/are about 5cm in height.

The pictures I have seen of this plant seem very small and compact when submerged and growing healthy. The last 4 leaves on each stem are algae free yet the rest of the leaves on each plant have been algae fodder. Was this the emergent growth and should I have trimmed them down before I planted them?

Most plants will need to do at least some adaptation, when moved from one environment to another, be it emerse=>submerse or submerse=>submerse. Staurogyne is no exeption.

Since the new growth sounds like being healthy (=adapted), I suggest you remove affected leaves, where possible.
After some time plants will have grown enough, to cut off the new, adapted growth - discharge of affected, old parts - and re-plant the new, adapted off-cuts.
After this, problems with algae attacking leaves, should only possibly occur on very old, dying leaves (which are then removed).
