Hi all,

As the title suggests I'm looking for small to mid ground crypt sp, can anyone advise through experience?

I've done some research and the smallest available seem to be hobbit lutea and parva. I'm considering 'mi oya", wendtii brown/green, flamingo, willinisi. I'm sure there are more candidates, and I've read about a method involving planting the roots into a small pot and inserting said pot into the substrate to restrict further growth, but im not sure thats a great idea condidering how heavy root feeders crypts usually are.

Any ideas welcomed.
Thanks,

Al.

did that with my Cryptocoryne wendtii Compact which has slowed down it spread more suitable for mid ground IMO dependent on size of tank OFC

trimmed it back to substrate level once and bounced back nicely

Hi
Cryptocoryne albida brown
Cryptocoryne costata
Cryptocoryne legroi
Are small size plants too with some really nice colours
The only thing about them is the fact that after 2 years I have exactly as many stems I started with.lol
First year grown high tech, now low tech. They are classed as medium difficulty but will grow nice in any light,co2 condition as long as substrate is a bit fertile.

hobbit lutea
Is a very unstable C. walkeri mutant. 🙂 You can't predict how it will turn out. I planted it as mid ground and it ruined the plan with not growing at all, in 2 years time still foreground size or just becoming to big not suiting the midground.. Not sure for how long this var. stays around, i'm not going to buy it again.

Parva and Albida brown are better candidatesthese need very perfect conditions to get bigger than 5 to 10cm.

willinisi
I guess you mean C. Willlisii which isn't realy a small crypt can get easily +20cm. Indonesii is comparable with willisii but darker green, both stay around the same size..

Thanks for the replies all..

Some great info there and I now have a plan the m&s to fellow board members

I'll see where my searches take me, if any of you have any samples you'd consider sending on for a fee please do let me know. Otherwise I'm googling some of these right now.

Best,
Al.
