Silly question about filter wool/floss

Hi all,

I was wondering if you can use standard cotton wool instead of filter wool? I know there slightly different but would they be safe and do the same sort of job?

I would guess no. Cotton wool fibres absorb water and will block the filter flow. Filter floss is nylon/manmade and the fibres are not absorbent.

Put it this way, it could be use the biggest concern would be its extremely fine and possibly has an Anti Bacteria in it which would result in killing all your good bacteria in your filter and tank.

Its the same with the foam only use Aquarium Safe.
