Hey can someone, anyone please help suggest a round-grain natural sand (1-2mm) ? I’ve gone down the rabbit hole of frantic research for my goldfish, and I cannot for the life of me find a trustworthy source with this spec! Help a gal out 🙏🐠

Welcome to the forum.

Unipac sands are commonly available, and are one of the manufacturers that actually quote the particle sizes:

GRAIN SIZES

The sizes stated are purely for guidance and should not be treated as specific. It is the consumer’s responsibility to ensure that the actual size is suitable for their requirements.

Sand is normally measured in microns (µ) and 1000µ = 1mm.
Unipac cannot accept liability for any variation in particle size.

SILVER SAND – 300µ to 400 µ
AQUARIUM SILVER SAND – 150 µ to 250 µ
SILICA SAND – 1500 µ to 2000 µ
AQUARIUM SILICA SAND – 800 µ to 1000 µ
NYASA- 1000 µ to 1200 µ
LIMPOPO BLACK – 1000 µ to 1200 µ
KIVU – 800 µ to 2000 µ
TANA – 800 µ to 2000µ
MAUI COARSE – 1000 µ to 2500 µ
MAUI FINE – 1000 µ to 1600 µ
FIJI COARSE – 1700 µ to 2500µ
FIJI FINE – 1000µ to 2000 µ
SAMOA COARSE – 1400 µ to 2000µ
SAMOA FINE – 1000 µ to 1600 µ
CORAL SAND – 800µ to 2000 µ

Hey thank you so much! I keep hearing that unipac isn't natural? I hear lots of negative comments about them. 🤔 it feels a minefield! I was looking at their Samoa Sand.

Isn't natural how? Some of their sands are manufactured - i.e. they crush down quartz etc, but they are not coated or chemically made, and of no risk to any aquarium inhabitants if that's what you are referring to.

I've used several of their sands without issue, and I'd wager a good chunk of folks on this forum have too.

Garden centres sell pea gravel, often golden, a mix really, in subdued colours, 1-3 mm for about £10 for 25kg, works a treat, you do need to rinse it with a decent kitchen sieve under the tap first. More expensive alternatives are available. The goldfish really don't care, they love mouthing pea gravel, in fact with good filtration, hornwort growing above them, and regular feeds, goldfish are ever so content with life and very long lived and very quickly in my experience, hand tame and aware of routines. I had goldfish in a good sized tank in my kitchen for some time, quite miss them now, they are in the pond, they got ever so excited when I put the coffee on in the morning.

Size and colour are two issues, but can’t how sharp a sand is also be an issue if you have fish like Corydoras?
I’m using silver sand in one of my tanks and it doesn’t seem too sharp. It would be nice to know whether sand has rounded grains or not. I’m guessing “play sand” might have rounded grains?

Corydoras
Yes, absolutely, they love silver sand/playpit sand, endlessly passing it out their gills after nose diving into the surface, under the microscope, sand - I don't have a microscope, I did a quick Google image search after your post got me thinking - looks like lots of little pebbles/cobbles, hardly completely 'rounded' but certainly not sharp and jagged. A bit like 'sea glass', which I suppose should not surprise us. Goldfish in my experience don't mind horticultural grit, but they don't quite mouth it, they sort of pick it up and spray it out. All good fun I suppose if you are a fish. Biofilm and mulm are I suppose actually quite tasty for fish.
