hi, i am looking for a red stem plant that will grow in my low tech setup: see 'my first journal'. the tank is 4ft, 216l with 1.25 wpg of t8's, 5mls TPN+ daily, and no co2. are there any red stems that will grow in my tank?

cheers 😀

Hi, I have read somewhere on the forum that red stems benefit from po4, so maybe you can have some on your tank.

If your tank is open top look at having some hanging planters, just below the water line, the plants would get lots of CO2 and light.. 🙂

You can get a hanging planter easily, get a shower caddy and fill it with rockwool. 🙂

I definately agree that red plants like po4. Been adding it as a dry salt for 2 days and the new growth on my red plants is really improving. It had been fading back to green with TPN+.

Don't know if you will get away with a totally red stem but you may be able to have a partially red one like Alternanthera Reineckii which was red stems and red on the bottom of the level. The tops of the leaves are green. I've grown it under high light but it is supposed to cope with 50w/100.

The lily that I'm sending to you today is very red. I picked the redder of the two after reading this. It started out in my low light tank (36w T8 over 90l) and has always been very red.

I know you aren't allowed a full pressurised co2 system. If the tank was a bit smaller one of the little aquagrow co2 systems might have been a possibility. Might work out costly on a bigger tank though
