Red Colored Plants Require High Lighting Levels to Grow well

This is what I keep hearing each time I talk to someone at a local aquarium shop here in my country.
"You cannot possibly grow a red coloured plant unless you have high lighting levels."
True or Just a Myth?

I would really appreciate it if someone could enlighten me on this one.
