I have emptied a tank I had some mystery deaths in. After taking all the plants out. I added potassium permanganate thinking it would kill any pathogens. It was pink. The colour has gone. Why? Could it be the carbon sponge? Shall I remove it and add more?

As it oxidises you get potassium ions and manganate ions. This is normal because it oxidises organic molecules. I would do as above.
