Possible Ludwigia?

Found this plant in a local creek, pretty sure its ludwigia but would like other opinions. This was the immersed type. There was some in the creek but it was under a foot of water and didn't have my bad shoes on 🙂

I would be very surprised, if that turns out to belong to Ludwigia. It is not typical for genus.

Where do you live? If you are in the UK it is not a Ludwigia. If it were near my home I would say it is Samolus valerandi but I can be wrong (sorry, don't know the name in English). If it is this species it is not really an aquatic plant (although can survive some periods of time flooded. I tried it nice and failed).

Jordi

Edit: I have seen that you also have in the UK the exotic and invasive Ludwigia peploides but it doesn't look at all like your plant or like the Ludwigia species we usually have in our tanks.
Another finding, S. veralandi English name is water cabbage 🙂

Samolus valerandi usually does not have that long internodes between leaves. It looks very much like new-grown lettuce, in fact. Leaves could be more "rustique" in lower temp. - but surface texture doesn't really fit the valerandi's I've seen.
- and I agree; Samolus valerandi is not a good aquatic.........

And yes; it would help, to know where this plant was found......

Hi Mick

Yes, long internodes made me doubt also but emersed plants sometimes look like this... The thing that doesn't fit with the P. veralandi I've seen is that the plant in the picture has opposite leaves. Let's wait for more clues...

Quite a long time ago (when I was young and kept tanks with any bug I could find and I was not really interested in plants) I tried this plant as well as Polygonum persicaria submerged young specimens, but I failed. But of course my tank was not exactly the best place for growing plants... I should try again P. persicaria, I've seen now some shops selling Polygonum species, although I'm not sure if they occur in similar habitats

I live in California actually. I found some ludwigia last year in the same creek. It was however later in the year when I stumbled across it. I thought it was the same thing just immersed version of the plant. I'll let it sit in the tank and see what it does. Supposed to get a big storm this weekend so I wont be able to go out and try and collect anything else, hopefully next weekend. Thanks for the replies

Then let it produce flowers - Ludwigia is really easy to recognize by flowers. Grow one in a pot in the window, if possoble. They're usually VERY easy to grow and flower in quite young plants - so it shouldn't take more than a few months, really. Also most grow fine on room-conditions.

Haha thanks Jordi. Once spring rolls around I'll snap some pictures of the creek. There are quite a few species of aquatic plants, its wonderful.

I'll put one in my little immersed set up right now 🙂

Apparently that's not how to use the quotes

No problem - personally I'm a complete ilitterate with PC :banghead:
That setup sounds like perfect idea.
