Peristaltic pinch pipe diameter

Hi everyone. I have 2 peristaltic pump I picked up cheap (free) I need to make some kind of programmer for them to dose my ei ferts. (Any help apprieciated) possibly a central heating water heater control? The peristalistic pumps I have state a rate of 6l/h I'm guessing this is faaar to much so is it possible to swap out the pinch pipe and put in a smaller diameter pipe that's more suitable to the ml dosage I require? Either that or a pwm to control the speed of the motor so it's easier to get the desired dosage? The pumps I have are aspen universal peristaltic pumps. A bit of overkill but they were brand new and free. Any help much appreciated thanks

So I worked out if I use this diameter pipe I will need to leave it on for roughly 13 seconds to get 20ml of liquid. I could dilute the liquid but to get any sensible time I'd need a 25l drum or something lol. So the question still is can I reduce the pipe diameter on peristaltic dosing pump?

Yes you can reduce the diameter but the tube is generally something special like Viton that can cope with the demands of the pump head. Search for Williamsons peristaltic pumps as they sell special tubing, mainly for their pump. Might fit yours.

You also need to ensure the pump head is 3 or 4 roller or else will back flow when off.

I feel you are into a bit of a loser as the pump rates are really too high for fish tank dosing rates where you are looking at in my case 3ml per minute macros/micros and 1ml per minute liquid carbon. Also dosing such large amounts will raise water level significantly so watch out for overflowing tanks.

If you control using a PLC (see my article in Diy section) you can run the pumps to nearest second which may help with high rate pumps, but is an expensive way to get not suited for the job pumps working.
 
Hi ian. Thanks for the link. I've had a look on there website and it seems they have the right tubing that I need. What size is generally used on dosing pumps?

I also see they sell the hole head fairly cheap so it's possible to just swap the head out with 1 that has a smaller diameter and smaller rubing.

The rotation of the motor is actually quite slow, not timed it.

I had read your article quite a while ago and looked into the plc for a different project but was faced by not sourcing one on the cheap 🙁 I did try my hardest. Do you know of another way to control this if I do get the flow rate down to something sensible?

Looks like they are the equivalent of Williamson 300 series pumps. If so the data sheet says if using 3mm tubing I'll still be pumping 55ml/m I think that's still to high. I could see if they sell a pump head with same size shaft but smaller size rotary head. With 3-4 rollers on. Or scrap it and buy some cheap pumps lol

The tube size used on the aquatic dosing pumps is 3mm and 1.6mm with 3rpm and maybe even 15rpm motors giving suitable dosing of 3ml per min. Yours unfortunately are way to big, the 300 series as someone points out. You will spend a fortune finding a timer that doses 10seconds. Better to get normal timer that times minutes and 100 series pumps that do 3ml per minute.
 
Yeah I think I'm going to scrap the idea. Free pumps but they are just way to big for my needs and will end up spending more buying the other parts to make it work. On an up note I could just sell these pumps and buy a pre built unit. I like tinkering though so will probs still just make one lol. Thanks for your help Ian. I will go to plan c and d
