Oase filtosmart flow

Morning,

I have taken the plunge and gone for an external filter, an Oase filtosmart. I have read the flow can be adjusted via the inlet/outlet pipes but I just have a question - if I wanted to reduce the flow, do I adjust both pipes to the same setting or just the outlet?

Thanks.

I have thought about this in the past, and (sadly) did some research. Apparently, it is better to restrict (reduce, not close off!) flow on outlet rather than the inlet. There seems to be more issues with cavitation and increased risk of pump damage if inlet restrictions are used.

Now, the better but more uglier approach is to let the pump operate at full flow and baffle the output so that it reduces the impact of flow into the aquarium. That way you maintain the maximum turnover capability. But it can be a little tricky to achieve.

However, there are people who reduce their flow using the Oase pipes/settings and do not seem to have any issues.

That’s great, thanks. The filter is coming today so I’ll reduce just the outflow initially so that it doesn’t blast my tank when it’s turned on! I’ll then gradually tweak it to achieve the right flow.
