Hi,
I se no reason whatsoever to remove the activated carbon. The bioballs, rings and carbon are as good a combination as you'll find. I agree that removing the floss will help your flow.

Wouldn't use carbon my self it doesn't take long to get exhausted I'd rather have more bio filtration than use that, I don't like bio balls ever prefer to use something porous with a larger surface area. In my eheim pro 3e 2076 I have 2 trays of substrate pro and bio mech I think it's called in the bottom (looks like flat squares with a dent in the middle) and the sponges.

Not heard of substrate pro reducing flow myself suppose all media does to an extent but it being porus shouldn't b bad. Bio balls just have abit of a bad rep for not being that great
