I’ve been keeping cardinal and neon tetras for quite sometime now and eventually got many cardinal fries. However, It seems like no matter how good the water qualities is, these fish will eventually contract the “Neon tetra disease” at one point. The symptom includes cyst growing on their mouth and curved spine seems to be untreatable. So I’m curious to know what caused this disease and I’d like to hear you guys experience on keeping cardinal or neons.

The disease is caused by a parasite, Pleistophora hyphessobryconis. Usually introduced through new fish or live food. The spores enter the digestive tract, develop into sporoplasms and burrow out to the skeleteal muscles where they form cysts. It can affect other tetra, not just neons. The early symptoms are hard to detect and it can spread fish to fish so it can be a tank killer.

Can they be treated in any way? I've tried a lot of different medications, but they never worked at all, and they all died. Quarantining fish also doesn’t seems to help as the disease seems to appear a year after.

If it is Neon Tetra Disease, it's untreatable. However, it's often misdiagnosed. I'd try a broad spectrum treatment, something like eSHa 2000, and see how you go.

eSHa medication isn’t available in my country, I did try various medication including Metronidazole and Mebendazole it doesn’t seems to work.

On another thread, I noticed that you had a cardinal and a neon tetra in your old dirt substrate low tech tank. How was your experience keeping them, and how long did you have them for?

Can you post a link to that thread please. I’ve kept both several times. Cardinals are a firm favourite, pretty much my go to species. They’re usually very healthy and robust fish. And often live far beyond their supposed lifespan. I try to be very discerning when buying livestock and only accept very healthy individuals even if I’m buying a couple of dozen. Any diseased fish that I’ve missed immediately go back to the LFS.

However, I have had some fish that seem to later develop what I identified, at the time, as neon tetra disease and I had to euthanise them. But it was only in one or two fish. The rest did not become infected. NTD is supposed to be very virulent. But I think if your tank is well balance and healthy and the same goes for your fish, their natural immunity can deal with most disease.

Do you think it’s okay to keep them in a no filter low tech tank?

Perhaps if the tank is densely planted, mature, and well balanced, and there is an alternative source of water movement and aeration. Otherwise no, anything less wouldn't be a particularly healthy environment for most aquatic critters.
