Hey guys,

So I was doing a 50% WC today and had the idea to open my pump to see if it needed cleaning (wanted to take water out so some impurities would come out, then fill it with water from the tank). I took a little bit of water from the pump, but I thought it might be better to do nothing. If it needed cleaning, I would ask here how to.

I went to connect it again, and at first it started to leak from the pipe taking water into the tank, and also from the division between the head and the canister. I took some water out via the pipe that brings water in, reconnected, turned it ON, and it doesn't leak from the division anymore, but it is leaking. little from the connections between the pipe and the head... I don't know what to do 🙁
I didn't touch this pipe at all - apart from after leaking, I tried to tie it up more, but still the same..

Filter - Eheim Classic 600 2217020 External Filter for Aquarium 1000 L/h < 600 L with Tap

I tend to use jubilee clips over the pipe onto the connector using only just enough pressure to provide an extra seal so that I don't overtighten. This may help.

This may not be good practice however, I am slightly paranoid about leaks and losing large amounts of water from the tank!!

Hmm... I did think that maybe I had it over-tight... I will try to release a little now and see

Edit: Did not work. Unfortunately I don't have a jubilee clip with me, and at this tim,e I don't think I can buy one haha

Hi
Remove the tubing and cut a piece off to make a new connection.
Clean the threads and round nut.
Don't use Vaseline to help attach the hose.

Looking at the nut, it looks like you’ve used pliers to do it up, suggesting that to been over tightened. It should be hand tightened only.
I thought it was Vaseline on the round nut!

I cant work it out, but this somehow looks wrong to me ........

No Vaseline was used a plier today to tighten it more - I thought that was the problem.

Yeah I panicked and thoguht of it but yeah wrong thought.

I hope not. I did it all as per instructions, and at the moment, the issue I am having is with the bottom one.

Also...I found the problem. It is extremely difficult to take a picture where you see, but the head is breaking. I moved a little, and I can see it opening a little bit. I tried to push it down so that the tube comes below the cut, but it is really difficult. And before I put glue, which was my next thought, I would rather ask if that would work at all.

Try a bit of ptfe tap, then a bit of electrical tape over top of that. Might get you out of trouble.
That is a great idea! I will pop into B&Q just next to my house tomorrow morning and get it and give it a try.

I hope having the filter off through the night wont affect the fish at all

I suspect the output pipe of the head may be cracked? If so you can buy a new cover for the head.
It’s part number 7633500. I’ve removed the covers on the 250 and 350 and it’s not particularly easy. Great care is needed not to damage the head or the cover.
Yes! It is the output pipe, that's it!
Good to know. I will get the ptfe tap tomorrow to at least have a filter working and try to buy the cover head only. Thank you buddy

Some items today can only safely be taken apart using what are sometimes called cracking kits. These are often small plastic wedges or levers for gently prying things apart. I’ve used small screwdrivers in the past but sometimes you need to use three or four wedges at once in order to take something apart. I took the top covers apart on my Classic 250 and Classic 350 heads in order to fit lifting handles. The 250 wasn’t too bad but the 350 had more tabs (circled) so I made up some plastic or wood wedges to remove the cover.
In your case, damaging the old cover isn’t a problem as it’s going in the bin, just don’t damage the head! Fitting the new cover is much easier than removing the old one.

When the cover is off check or replace the O ring that seals the outlet pipe and apply some silicone grease or Vaseline.

The Eheim Classics are fine filters, apart from damage there are only three places they can leak. The main seal, the O ring on the inlet pipe bend and the O ring inside the head. Unlike more modern designs it’s normally pretty easy to work out where the leak is.

I’ve only had two issues with the Classics. The modern Chinese made ones can be noisy (unlike the original German ones).
Not having a handle on the top can make handling them less than ideal when it comes to maintenance. I corrected that problem by fitting my own. I hasten to add that I lift them with two hands rather than letting the head take all the weight though.

Thank you very much, honestly! I bought the PFTE tape and used some electrical tape afte,r and the leak was minimised. I had to tape a little more up the pipe for it to stop leaking fully. Thank you very much to all!

I have ordered the cover, but it will take a week to arrive. I shall update you then 🙂
