I always thought it was a marketing ploy, but it really is true, and they do a good job. I got that soft fluffy algae on the glass in one of my tanks and I recently put some Melanoides Granifera in, and they are mowing right through it. Photography was difficult, but you can sort of see the outline of eaten algae in the center of this picture.
I don't have photographic evidence, but I have seen Gyraulus sp. snails also eat tracks in this same type of algae. Maybe snails get a bad rap...
