So I had some inheritance recently and decided it was time to upgrade a tank I was not happy with. I still didn't want to break the bank so was looking at more budget end of the scale. Finally I settle on size over optiwhite glass. Hence the name of the journal. Personally I don't have a need for the tank to be pretty only what's inside it counts. So i went for a diversa tank with stand. It came yesterday and I put it together after dismantling the old setup. It's 100x50x50 sold as 250l. For the price I am very impressed. Delivered on a Sunday which was perfect for me. The chap even carried it in with me. Just did the first fill. It was quite stressful. It was my first tank without a plastic base for a while so I had image in my head of a cracked base. Or the floor giving way. The house is 90 after all.

Time to buy lots of things the right size for this tank lol

Hope the other half doesn't notice how much it will all add up to.

So I have been having a play with the hardscape today. Going to live with it for a while ad see how it feels. Idea is to have a triangle planting scheme with negative space in the front right. Carpet in the left foreground. Some ferns and other epithites around the woodand rocks and some cryptocoryne and stems.

Hi, I really like the shape of the hardscape you have created.
It will work exactly like it is especially with the triangular planting scheme you suggest, however I feel you could really emphasise the shape further by adding a few extra pieces of wood to the scape.
Please don’t feel like this is something you need to do, especially if the other half is watching things add up, but I have mocked up a rudimentary edit with five extra pieces of wood which I think could further enhance the hardscape layout.

Living with a hardscape you like for a few days is smart but I think you are into a winner with this layout.

Thanks for the input Ady these details make all the difference but I don't have the most create mind so I cant see the path needed in my head sometimes. I will have to find some wood somewhere to finish it off. Not many good hardscape stores in or around Portsmouth which also limits my creativity sometimes

No worries. I’m sure if you contact any of the forum sponsor stores they would be more than happy to discuss your specific requirements and hand pick pieces to post out for you.
Cheerio,

Great input, any hardscape you can project closer to the foreground will aid in a deeper image. I'd also keep in mind most of us don't keep ontop of trimming as much as we should and hardscape is easily lost under foliage, so sometimes more hardscape helps this.

Do you have an aim for particular planting style? Any favourite plants going in ?

So what else would one do with a week off? Aquascape of course. Plants arrived at 7.50 this morning and I started at 10. Finished by 3pm. Ordered the wrong size gravel for the front section so this will come tomorrow and be done during the water change. Few more plants on order as well for a few gaps. Went for mostly 1-2-grow plants this time so will take while to fill in. Other half didn't realise I had this planned today or I wouldn't have got away with rescaping the fluval flex yesterday 🤣🤣🤣

So a couple days in now. Using the light that came with the tank at the moment. Let everything settle in before I add some better lights. It's a bit green/yellow for my liking but seems OK for now. The filter is no where near strong enough so new one and a powerhead coming Monday. Amazed how quick the crypts in the back are growing. Only 1-2 grow so you can't see them in the picture yet
