Light distance from water surface. What is happening ?

During water changes, my plants start pearling as the water empties from the aquarium. I figure there must be some sort of lensing effect between my plants and light. I've always wondered what would happen if I left my water level at the optimal depth. I never really tried.

Today I decided to raise my light to give the edges of my tank more even PAR with the center. My plants are now pearling vigorously and I never changed the intensity of the light. They should have less PAR. Hmm... Not an intuitive response.

What is happening ?

As you raise the light less intensity more co2 for the light driving force= pearling I guess ? Someone will correct me if I'm wrong 🙂

Yes, my thought as well.

I wish there was a way for me to make more educated guesses about what level my PAR should be for optimal growth/health.
