Ramble details
Farnborough circular walk.
Distance: 4.5 miles
Will take under 2 hours at a casual stroll.
Date\TimeSat 19th June. 10am.
Start\Finish point: George pub, Church Road, Farnborough, Bromley, Kent (NOT the Farnborough in Hampshire!).
Nearest railway: Orpington station.
I can meet people at the train station and drive to the start point (2miles away). or, if you prefer, catch the 358 bus towards crystal palace.
Walk blurb:
Whilst still classified as Greater London Farnborough has a Kent postcode and what I would describe as a typical 'Ye olde Kent village' feel to it.
Of specific fishkeeping interest we will pass a pond (one of two) which when I was last there (in the autumn) had abundant amounts of giant willow moss in it.
There are grey alder trees enroute (alder cones are good for acidifying soft water, although it is not the best time of year to pick them).
It is also a really nice walk, it takes in typical Kent woodland along with some not so typical gorseland (not sure if that is a real word!).
We also come across some historic stuff including...
Relics from an iron age earth works.
Holwood estate (home of William Pitt, prime minister from 1785 to 1803).
Wilberforce oak (the spot where William Wilberforce resolved to abolish slavery).
For those wanting to get a history lesson concerning William Pitt's time here I can thoroughly recommend the book 'William Pitt the younger' by William Hague.
