So 4 months in, and my vals refuse to grow high. Have posted before on this and played about on advice of others, root tabs flourish tnc complete tank is well if not over fertilised as well as high light, does anyone else experience this with vals?

Val shoots runners but stay fairly short not shooting up to the tank surface as you would expect.

No3 40ppm
Seachem flourish dose every other day.
Tnc complete every other day.
2 fluval aquasky lights running one at 100% the other at 80% also dose excel to the tank everyday zero plant melts was introduced gradually,

Any ideas folks

I've not used it myself, but I understand that val. doesn't do well with it. I suggest stopping using it and seeing what the results are.
I wasn’t dosing excel to start with this has just been recently I doubt that is the cause as growth has been the same before it.

What variety of Val did you get (there are shorter varieties)?

If I'm honest I cant see anything off on your parameters, light, fertz, etc all seem reasonable. Val is a rampant plant even when things are not with it, but it can take a while to adapt/and get going. However, 4 months I'd have expected it to almost become a nuisance by now.

The only small thing of note is that the gravel is quiet coarse, but I wouldn't have thought it would make a difference. And hence why I'm only left asking about the variety of plant.

Yeh really is bizarre, it was just val I got out my local fishkeeper maiden aquatics, when purchased from them I did notice there’s was fairly tall. They used tnc complete as there fertiliser when I asked back then

It didn’t have a tag on the variety when I purchased this unfortunately

You could roll the dice and see if you can get another batch, maybe try ordering some from a reputable supplier - look at the forum sponsors.

Unsure if you have the number of posts which unlocks the sale section here, some members have some to sell on occasions.

I am at a loss as to what else it could be.

I would support this. Mine grows like a weed, but liquid carbon had a negative impact. My experience is that it grows well in areas of flow (although TBF that doesn't look like an issue) and with some aqua soil to root into.

I would stop the liquid carbon for a while. Not convinced it does much anyway.

It could also be that it's spending more energy rooting in?

Looking at the Vallisnera and their leave tips, they seem healthy to me. So thumbs up!
There are a lot of varieties out there, all with their own heights. Might try another variety like V spiralis.
I’ve been told stuff like Excel and their active compounds harm thin cell structures of real (submerged only) aquatic plants like Vallisneria, Egeria etc…

Shooting more runners today, I have stopped the excel since Sunday, guess I have nothing to lose on skipping excel for now see if more improves. Pretty much tried everything else far as it gos with water parameters. Thanks for all the advice 👍

I would second that, it's a weed of a plant that takes over the whole tank if not kept in check.
It looks healthy enough you most likely have Vallisneria torta (tortifolia)

Order Vallisneria Nathan's or Vallisneria Gigantea and add it to the back.
Vallisneria Gigantea has a wider leaf

So Vall torta is the shorter version of this plant? To be fair was just looking for a good background plant with that jungle look, thanks for the info
