Just received this from a seller on eBay claiming its java moss! . I have incidentally kept reptiles over many years and collected my own woodland moss on many occasions, 99.9% sure this has come from the woods and hasn't seen an aquarium. I paid £6.00 for two pieces so not the end of the world but its a shame some people feel its OK to rip others off.

Wow yeah thats from the woods alright, complete with pine needles it looks like? The nerve of some people..
Can you report them to ebay to prevent them from scamming others?

Yes there are definitely some old pine needles and a few unidentified seed husks in there. Clearly I'll message the seller to make them aware I know what he's done and report him for selling this as aquarium moss.

Thanks Darrel, my next job was identifying the species so I can doubly put him straight. At the time I did think the price was really good, now I know why! On checking Ebay it appears he has sold 14 lots in the last 24hrs.

Post us a Ebay link to this ejit!

I tried to post a link but couldn't do it. I blame my age ! Anyway this is the guy, from Preston. Apparently he has 390 lots available and it's from a sustainable source( see local woods in Preston)

Hi all
It looks similar to the java moss I have growing in a large bin ,in full sun outdoors in the garden for the last 3-4 years.(Actually my girlfriend's dad garden)
I keep Asellus aquaticus ,ramshorn snails and Crangonyx pseudogracilis living there.
It freezes over in winter sometimes and almost dries out if not raining frequently during summer but the moss is growing very well and forms thick mats like seen in his pics.
It is full of debris and grasses but is still java moss.
I have introduced Damselfly nimphs to my tank in past when used the moss from that tub for my tanks but I keep puffers so they made quick work of them;)
I will take few pics of it when Im there.

Disclaimer:
I am based in Preston but Iam not the seller
Regards Konstantin

Hi all,
on that so called Java Mos:eek:s!!!
It might be <"Palustriella commutata">.

That won't be Java moss (Taxiphyllum barbieri) as such, because it isn't hardy. I have a <"moss mountain with five or six different species of native moss">

The problem with all these mosses is getting the correct name, which is dependent on having a capsule and the <"nature of the leaf (microphyll) cells and venation">.

cheers Darrel
