Is a trident shaped leaf a one time mutation or do I have a trident leaf capable rhizome? I can't imagine how I could have missed this when I look at the tank everyday and it's just beside my bed at eye level.

Also, I just saw some trident Javas last week and they were more like narrow leaved ones with multiple prongs.

Many microsorum varietes can develop this trident like fork.. If all leaves in the pic are from the same rhizome, it's likely something else.. The trident indeed is narrow, more like the taiwan variety with 3 to 5 lobes.... 🙂

I'm not sure if it is true, but according to Tropica the trident developed as cultivar others state it's origine is Indonesia.. 🙂 So likely trident is just a trade name.. Not very much info to find about it.. But if you look at the regular java from tropica also can develop this lobbing and also is a narrow but still wider as the trident.. 🙂

Out of curiosity, I took the whole piece out for a good look. It did look like it's made up of various rhizomes tied in a row.

HOWEVER, I traced its neighboring leaf on the same rhizome and it was a normal broad leaf.

Just google Microsorum pteropus images.. You find trident forks almost on any variety.. It's pretty common.. The one called trident is the champion of course. 🙂

Weird how I've never seen any previously on the 10+ plants (౩ versions) I have in my tank.

Not trident. Trident is a great variety of java I think. You should get your hands on some.

I saw it in a shop in another state 2 weeks ago. Wasn't really impressed. Got 3 cups of tissue cultured stuff instead.

Actually, I got it wrong. I have 4 types in my tank.

Lots of Windelovs, then the broad leaved ones, a bit of needle / narrow leaved ones and the so-called Philippine variety.
