Hi . Just wanted to know if it is possible to have otos & shrimps in a non co2 tank? I am sorry for the dumb question but I thought I remember reading somewhere that Otos might not fare well in a non co2 environment ,...though I just can't find a reason why it shouldn't.

Any input is worth a lot.

I dont think its anything to do with co2, just that they prefer softer/acidic conditions i beleive. Otos that is, And are very sensitive to water conditions. So a stable environmment is paramount to all. I think if the water was right, co2 or not, you would be fine.

I failed with a pair I had from many moon back, but I was using London tap water. Which is very hard that it would give Ron Jeremy on the blue tabs a run for his money. I may try again with rain water in the near future.

the two main reasons people fail with otos in my opinion are
1. they buy recently imported specimens
2 the otos starve in the tank after a month or two,
just my thoughts

Mine may have been imported cant say really, got mine from wholesale tropicals some 3 yrs ago, but I bought them as I had an algae issue, diatoms too, which apparently Ottos love, kill two birds with one stone I thought did add cucumber and pellets too (for cories), so dont think they sttarved, but the ottos just dissapeared after two weeks. So many nooks an cranies in the tank, not sure where they went. 🙁 . Just put it down to water, high ph with massive hardness.

I replaced them with bristle noses, cant say if they were as good on the diatoms, as they algae did remain, but plecs are happy and are now 3 yrs old.

Cheers guys. Thank you so much for the extensive inputs. It's much appreciated. 😀 I am thinking of starting a 3 footer non co2 (maybe by the end of this year). I am planning on adding some nice shrimps & Otos. I love Otos,...I think they are really cute,...especially when they think of a leaf as a bed. They look so cosy when they appear to take a nice nap on a Hygrophila leaf. 😀

I am seeing so many nice looking non co2 tanks these days,...& it fits nicely into my daily schedule too.

Thank you all again for such a speedy reply. 😀
