Hi all

As a new member I am still finding new topics and last night I came across the "where to buy" section. Someone posted about where to go if you were visiting China or Hong Kong to which I offered a short reply but then thought it may be of interest on here as it is a busier part of the site.

I usually visit Hong Kong and China once a year but rarely visit the fish markets - In my earlier life I was in the aqautic business from being a Saturday boy in 1979 to running my own import / wholesale business until 1994, after which I got fed up with wet things (counting 1000's of goldfish and falling into vats at 1am in freezing conditions is not much fun). Anyway, I've got the bug again now and will visit the markets and stores next time I go and take a load of pics for the forum.

Basically there are hundreds of shops and a large open air market selling all things fishy, I can't begin to describe the sight of it as you really have to see it in the flesh but I'll leave you a few links I have found.

Apologies if this is all old ground for you

Thanks for sharing the pics. I frequent Hong Kong each year and visit a few of the shops and have a nice rapport with a few of the owners. Especially with the one who won the 2008. Hes opened a new shop in causeway bay which specialises in more hard scaping rather than fish.

Should visit it. I think its on battery street or something. Its tucked away.

I'll have a look next time I go.

One good turn deserves another - If you want a friendly pub without streams of tourists try The Junk Pub on Jaffe Rd. If you want a 24 hour pub with good atmosphere and not full of drunk Aussies try The Bridge on Lockhart.

You may of course already know these

I know the lockhart but I frequent TST more. Have you been to other fisheries based in the New territories? I am going to visit a well known discus breeder in Yuen Long. I think its called Sunny discus. His fish have won many international awards.

No I haven't done any fishy visiting apart from the area previously mentioned. Next time I go I'll spend an extra day there. I have a good friend in HK that I know from when we were both in the industry in UK so I'll get him to take me around as he still dabbles in exporting a few fish to UK.

In HK business types are clustered so shopping is easy. Jaffe Rd is full of bathrooms, Happy Valley area is full of lighting, Lockhart (part of it) is full of hooker bars etc etc

God I miss the place!

I was planning to go Japan this year, but after the natural disaster I decided not to. I would have liked to visit other places rather than just nigata.
So instead I will head to Singapore and visit aquaram and some fish farms :)

Man, do I NEED to go there!!!

You should consider it, maybe as a group of UKAPS members. The main downside with HK though is that beer prices are through the roof!

You can also get return to Singapore from HK with Tiger Airlines for just over £120 inc luggage

If you visit a fish farm in Singapore email them beforehand and advise them you are opening a tropical fish outlet in the UK, not only will they wine and dine you free of charge (you pay for hotel though) they will give you as many plants as you want FOC which you can post back to your "Aquatic Plant Manager".

Dont feel guilty about doing the above, they wine and dine customers all the time without the guarantee of an order, and you never know you might open an outlet one day.
