I hate heaters!

Hi all,

Through my own stupidity I managed to melt the plastic guard onto my visitherm. More specifically I asked the Mrs to turn the heater on for my water change bin, forgetting that I actually hadn’t added any ro water to it! The smell of burning plastic in the garden was quite something when I got home from work!!

Needless to say I thought I’d look for a replacement. Found a hydor Theo which I thought would be good and was a very cheap price (I know why now!). The heater arrived, turns out it’s plastic rather than the usual glass but nevermind. However here’s the main issue, it floats!!! I proceeded to use it and thought the suckers supplied would hold it down. Turns out they don’t! One hour in to using this piece of cheap crap I go and check on my water change bin. Find the heater floating on top cracked, melted glowing orange and fit for the bin. Just a heads up, don’t buy it if you see one. There’s a reason why it’s cheap.

The only heaters I’ve used that are any good are schego titanium’s but I can’t bring myself to spend that much for my water change bin. Saying that the amount I’m spending on other heaters I’m going through it’s turning out to be a bit of a false economy.

Anyway rant over, I hope you all have a great weekend!

Cheers

Conor

Honestly heaters are a damn nightmare. I binned 4 supposedly top end heaters recently, now I use mid range priced heaters and if they give up the ghost its not such a drama. Don't get me started on suction caps........

What about the dennerle compact with overheat protection? The largest one of those heats up to 180l. Slightly more expensive then a regular one but not by too much.

Hi Folks,

I bought a Dennerle Nano Heater Compact 50W about a month ago. So far, so good but it's very early days.

I've always had good luck with eheim Jager heaters in the past.

However with my current tank I've decided to free myself from heaters go unheated.

Had one of those before and it stopped working completely after a couple of years.

This is the safest bet. In my main aquarium I have schego titanium’s which are brilliant, they’re the only heaters I’d recommend. But I’m not shelling out over 50quid to use one on a water change bin. I ended up buying another visitherm as the last one before I melted it was pretty good. In fact I’m pretty sure it’d still worked now as the glass hadn’t even cracked on it, it’s just encased in a load of molten plastic 😂

In all fairness how long do you expect something like this to last? Glass heaters have never lasted much longer then a few years top for me, even back in the 90s...

That’s ridiculous though isn’t it? They’re the one thing that if they fail they can have catastrophic consequences and they seem to fail more than any other piece of kit. Don’t get me wrong having them stop working is much better than having them stick on, which I’ve also had before. Thankfully I noticed before my fish were boiled.

I also always use an external controller now too, you have to with the schego’s but I also used to before after the near miss boiling incident.

Cheers

It is, but quality costs more 🙁

I've once had a thermostat stop functioning without notice and I don't know for how long the heater was off. It was during the wintertime when the house every night doesn't get much warmer than 15°C, then the tank is fairly below 20°C. I had a bunch of Rasboras in the tank that absolutely didn't seem to mind. Thus since I didn't know for how long it was off I kept it off permanently and the rasboras lived a happy long life for years without a heater at some times fairly below their recommended temperature. 🙂

I'm not sure how the fish databases collect and or test their data but it seems (some) tropical fish sp. likely are much less temperature-sensitive as described. And that a lot of people waste energy by taking heaters for granted because we never knew any better than we should have one because of the data that is presented. The same for me, it never crossed my mind to doubt it. It was a coincidental experience to find out that I actually never really needed it in that particular setup.

I know of some tropical plants that require a certain temperature range to prosper, such as Juncus repens stops growing and starts melting below 15°C I've witnessed it doing so in an outdoor setup. But the majority of available plants also doesn't really mind lower temperatures once they are maturely rooted.

Schegos are great but they don’t stir your water for you and heat quite as fast as a Sous Vide cooker does!

I use the ANOVA Precision cooker to stir and heat my waterchange water (for mixing and heating my marine salt water), best thing about it is you can remove the shroud and fit it through the opening on a 25L Jerry can!

Makes mixing and bringing to temperature an absolute doddle, cheaper than a Schego and required temperature controller at the current sale price!

🙂

That is genius i have to say.... especially for tubs and water butts....

I place the heater in my water change reservoir on the bottom. Even if the pump runs dry there is still 2-3 inches of water at the bottom to cover and protect the heater.

Great!! Reminds me of the Youtube channel Sous Vide Everything... I bet he doesn't yet present the fish tank...
