Hi all,

i recently uprooted one of my tanks to sell, and now have my carpet of monte carlo floating in freshwater, no lights, filter, anything.

Just wanted to ask, how long can I keep it like this until replanting? Before this tank, I had the MC out of water, not even planted; inside one of my propagators lying on some plant soil, must have been at least a couple of weeks, and suffered no major side effects, resumed growing once planted.

If it can't last long, will need to quickly consider my options

Quite some time i have it already for weeks in a jar with water on the window sil north side no direct sun. You biggest concern is alga growth.. No ferts, natuaral light and stagnant water the plant will not do much and is a condition where algae is around the corner waiting to strike. MC is a rather hardy little plant and you also could keep it on soil emersed in a sterile closed jar or box. This way you keep it rather moist than submersed and free from algae and it even might grow some more for you. 🙂

With no light at all in the terms of dark, no plant will take that very long. Never tried, but might live the longest like that in a very cool invironment. Matter of days maybe..

I basically need it to survive 2-3 weeks realistically, i think if it goes towards 2 weeks i'll move it to emersed and play safe

I find it does better (bright green & no algae) if just kept flat in a bin/container with just enough water to almost/barely cover it
I try to change out the water often, add some dilute Tropica fertilizer occasionally

You can put it in a sealed transparent bag, near a window. No need to put any water in the bag, since it´s sealed humidity is gonna be enough to maintain it without algae.

Just open the bag every 2-3 days for few minutes to let the plant breath.

Have kept ferns this way for months...no problem.
