Greetings!
I’ve been a lurker for the past few months with this being my first post here.
I am seeking some advice as I’m observing some yellowing/browning of my glosso (even though they’re growing well & spreading steadily). I’m not sure if this is normal glosso growth behavior or if it is a potential problem. Some examples here:
I did not add any fertilizer(!) since substrate is supposedly nutrient rich + all my plants are root feeders. The plan was to supplement from month #3. Admitting my mistake, I have since started to daily dose 1mL APT Complete hoping to improve the situation.
Please advise if there’s anything else I should do. Feel free to roast me as well. I probably do deserve a good smacking
Tank setup:
Dimensions: 60(L) x 30(W) x 25(H)
Lights: Chihiros WRGB 2 Slim 50%
CO2: Pressurized, via diffuser, at about 2-3bps
Substrate: ADA Amazonia 2, with the original root tabs
Hard scape: Inert river rocks
Filter: Fluval 207 with Seachem Matrix
Plants (all tissue culture):
Glossostigma elatinoides
Eliocharis acicularis mini
Eliocharis pusilla
Fauna:
Red cherry shrimps (started with 11, now down to 2)
Observations:
1) Continuous new growth, all plants species sending runners, roots appear to be healthy
2) Pearling throughout the tank
3) New glosso runners initially white, then turned green. However some are turning brown as of late
History/background:
This is my first planted tank. It’s been planted for about 2 months now. Prior to planting, I did a dark start for 2 months with the filter running since using ADA Amazonia 2 (I’m from SE Asia) to deal with the ammonia situation. Other than substrate, there was also seiryu stone (probably fake), and a large spider wood. BBA started to grow due to the fact that the biofilm did not go away even with regular brushing + WC). Gave up on my “nature aquarium” dream and converted it to an iwagumi (with intentions to run it nature style). Ran bare tank with rocks & substrate for a week with no BBA/algae issues, and then decided to start planting.
Extremely rewarding to have noticed growth the very next day! Grass started to propagate within the week. Weekly WC (30-40%). Did my first trim after a couple of weeks. No visible algae. Was worried about ammonia source for the beneficial bacteria (since no algae), decided to introduce shrimps. Most were very small - at my request. They were happy, and molting even. But started to die off one at a time, and now I’m left with the largest 2. I probably should have requested for adults.
I’m now observing yellowing/browning on the glosso. Grass seem to be doing great though! I guess most plants should be affected if it was fertilizer deficiency? Perhaps it is a matter of time? I quickly started a 1ml APT3 dosing for a couple of days now and decided to reach out for help here in the forum.
I’ve read conflicting reports on glosso that they need lights and not care much about fertilizers. But then again some have it thriving in low tech tanks.
I took a risk with glosso. I only ever wanted to start a long term nature style shrimp tank: lots of grass with moss on the driftwood. Switching to iwagumi was a spur of the moment thing as BBA is apparently like god level algae but somehow I seem to have been blessed with it (during a dark start!). Locally sourced driftwood is down to a choice of between either azalea root or mangrove. So I went with the iwagumi route instead, not as a challenge or anything but just for a basic riverbed nature style instead of risking another episode of BBA with another azalea root.
Thanks for making it to the end. Appreciate any tips/feedback/help/responses…
