Note: Diatoms is usually found in new tank set ups.
Interestingly, you can keep these diatoms alive in water under the microscope for a long time but the minute you put them in immersion oil (cedar wood oil) they start to disintegrate from the inside. Perhaps cedar wood oil can be used for treatment of diatoms
