After a bit of reading last night I've ordered myself some alfagrog to replace all the expensive media in my 405.
I'm also going to follow some advice i read regarding covering the inlet with sponge.
The question i have is, and I'm really sorry if this has been covered before, do i use the new media in all 4 baskets and do i leave the fluval internal sponges in place ?
Many thanks for looking.

funny enough i also got a fluval 405 not long ago. i dont know much about alfagrog but im following the pondguru style of setting up a filter.

its an efficient method of stocking the filter.

Thanks for the reply
I'm not sure but that seems to go against everything i read on here last night, the general train of thought, if i understood correctly, was to remove the mechanical filter medium from inside the filter ??

I maybe didn't explain myself very well. Sorry.
I was mostly wondering if the water flow would be effected if the internal sponges were removed completely. Hope that makes sense.

ohhh my bad. yes the flow rate will be alot better. however, because you will have allot of fish poop and other matter flowing through the filter without anything to stop it. the impeller will clog up really fast really fast and flow rate will drop dramatically. in short, you will have better flow rate for a short period of time and them motor will clog. i would keep the sponges

Thanks. I'm not doing a great job here, sorry. I read that sponge around the inlet end of the filter system takes care of the mechanical side of filtration, i was just wondering if water would still be pulled through the baskets if the internal sponges were removed or if these are required to direct the water through them ?

sponge or not water will still flow through. a sponge on the inlet will only stop big and maybe medium particles. it wont stop the small and fine particles from going into the motor and clogging it. why do you want to remove the internal sponges

Thanks aqua hero. I probably sound like I'm arguing, it's just your advice seems to be going against most of what i read last night, I'll watch the video you linked again and give it a go

0h no dont worry i didn't take it at all like an argument  when i bough the filter i was looking at reviews as well as researching on canister filters in general. after many youtube videos and forums later i found this video which was my conclusion.
