Hello all, I’m looking to buy one of those external filters for my next aquarium, a 140 liters planted scaper. What are your opinions about those? Looking for people who owned one of these filters, pros and cons and so on.
I have been using the Oase Biomaster 250 (thermal) for over eight months and have had the chance to get up close and personal with the product. I thought it would be good to document my experience for the benefit of others, which may help people use them or find an alternative.
What is the Oase Biomaster
The Biomaster series represents the top end of the Oase range. They are compact units (using height rather than width for range scale) and include space for internal heating devices. The units are available in four sizes, but all function similarly. The only...
I’m reasonably pleased with my Biomaster 350. I also bought a Fluval 207 a while back for another tank but only used it for a week. It wasn’t as quiet as expected and the vertical hose outlets is a very poor design if you plan to put it in a cabinet unless you have lots of room. I replaced it with an Eheim Classic 350. I’ve no experience of the Aquael, are spares readily available for them? Just wondering as soon or later you may need them. Let us know how you get on.
The main thing in my opinion is the that the biomaster gives you the option to put the heater in the filter which makes the aquarium itself look tidier. Currently have a fluval 207 and I'm happy but next time I will probably get a biomaster.

I had a Fluval 307, now have a 107. I also have a Biomaster 350 and two Biomaster 600.
You can't really go wrong with either of them honestly. I would go for a 600 on a 140 liter tank. A 250 is asthmatic.
Fluval 307
Positives:
Almost entirely silent
Solid construction
Nice trays for media
Nice priming thingy
Negatives:
God awful hoses as standard
Awful in/out as standard
Biomaster 350/600
Positives:
Almost entirely silent. May purge air occasionally, but I think this has mainly been fixed with the Biomaster 2.
Solid construction
Nice trays for media.
Prefilter? I don't really care about this, but many like it.
Heater in the filter is great. Less crap in the tank!
Nice priming button
Negatives:
AWFUL in/out as standard on the biomaster 1. Fixed on the 2 from what I can tell.
Many seals = many potential points of failure.
Some think the standard plastic media isn't great. I like it though, works just fine. Biomedia is overrated regardless. Lots of marketing and BS in that field.
Fairly weak pumps compared to the size of filter IMO.
