I’ve recently swapped out my tank for a 170ltr 90cm tank and now have a Oase biothermo 250 on it . My problem is I don’t feel I have nearly enough flow from it . Is there any way of improving or are these canister filters simply not up to the manufactures ratings . Also what filter would people recommend for a 170ltr ?

My usage has shown that it is around 50% of the manufacturer's specifications. I was getting around 500 l/ph from my 250 when testing. That will turn over your aquarium around 3 times for filtration purposes. The 850 will take you up to around 900 l/hr, but none of them are going to give you what is stated on the box for various reasons. In reality, the filter needs to be calculated on reasonable flow + the amount of bioload you place on it.
If it were me, I would not worry too much about filter turnover for actual filtration purposes caveat bioload requirements. Three times turnover would be enough. But for flow purposes, you can get a small powerhead and hide it to acheive aereation and good flow around the aquarium for the plants' nutrient distribution.
A biomaster 600 or 850 would be more appropriately sized for a 170l 90cm tank in terms of flow rate. Some people have upgraded their Biomasters by replacing the head unit on a 250 with one from a 600 or 850. Not cheap, but a lot cheaper than buying a whole new filter.
So I’m guessing these come with the impellers in them ? Direct fit as body is just taller than 250 ? I only want it for movement n the tank as it all looks a bit stagnant at the moment compared with my old set up . If I could get a white Powerhead I would but don’t like the idea of a black lump in the tank
I managed to get good flow and aeration using the 850 and Lilly pipes on my 100cm tank. Some may argue that it has a little too much surface agitation (and I churn through CO2!), but there is good gas exchange at least!
Some good suggestions so far. If you aren't injecting CO2 and have a reasonable fish load, than the Biomaster 250 will suffice I'm sure. If you are having issues with dead spots then a powerhead is an easy way to fix the problem without spending a fortune, swapping the filter head to one further up in the range is another option as already mentioned. If your plants are growing well and you aren't having any issues, then you don't necessarily need to have more flow. I'm running a 75 litre tank 60cm tank with a Biomaster 250 and a 145litre 90cm tank with a Biomaster 850 - both are CO2 injected though.
Mine is CO2 injected and I have very little surface movement and a dead spot under area of outlet . I’m relying on the surface skimmer of my inlet pipe to provide my only surface break , which in the long run won’t be sufficient . I don’t like the idea of a big black powerhead in the tank as it will look ugly !! 😂 . If I had room in cabinet I would ad a second 250 but think swapping head out for a 600 would be my best option along with change my steel lily pipes for glass so can point outfeed towards surface for more agitation.
