Fish as c02 source for plants

if you have the right amount of fish for you tank can they provide enough c02 for the plants to survive? in this case that plants arent very demanding

That was one of the ideas that Diana Walstad had originally, that you could have very little water movement and the CO2 produced by the fish, plants at night (and decomposition of the organic fraction of the soil substrate) would supply elevated levels of CO2 for the plants during the photoperiod.

Her book (<"Ecology of the Planted Aquarium">) is well worth reading.

The real problem is that the combination of high CO2 and low oxygen can kill your livestock at night.

A safer option, low tech., is to have a "large gas diffusion surface", which means that the levels of all dissolved gases will more closely track atmospheric levels. Details in this thread, <"Maxing CO2 in Low Techs.">.

Loool I have read the book. It was very interesting. But what about having floating plants. I'm sure they can provide enough oxygen in the water so that at night there won't be too much of a problem.

I like floating plants, but all plants are net users of oxygen outside of the photo-period.

It is only when light intensity increases above the light compensation point (LCP) plants become net oxygen producers (LCP is when the oxygen evolved from photosynthesis exceeds the oxygen used by respiration).

Photosynthesis occurs in the green sections of the plant (green because they contain chlorophyll), so in a floating plant, where the leaves are on the waters surface, most of the oxygen & CO2 produced/consumed will come from/escape into the atmosphere.

If you don't want much flow, you can run an air stone on a timer at night, this will have the effect of adding oxygen and out-gassing some of the CO2, via an increased gas exchange surface.
