External Pump for water changes

I'm looking for an external pump to make my water changes a bit easier.

Preferably one that doesn't have to be submerged where I can have 2 pipes, one attached to it's inlet and placed in the water container (25L jerrycan) and the other going from the outlet into the tank.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks Paul,

It's good to see how long it takes others to do water changes. It usually takes me an hour minimum, I'm using 10L buckets at the moment and my tank is upstairs so carrying all that water is getting a bit tedious after 2 years ;)

So my plan was to use the 25L jerrycans to cut down on carrying then pump it back into the tank. But all the pumps I've found seem to be of the immersible kind.

I think you are asking for a suction pump? If so you are going to struggle as self priming suction pumps are powerful specialist pieces of equipment!
However try looking for a boat bilge pump as there are some very small diameter one available that would drop into your can.
I am using my mobile at the moment but I will see if I can find one for you later on....

Edit - here you go this sort of thing, only 36mm diameter http://www.force4.co.uk/c/28/Freshwater ... sortby=rel near the bottom of the page

Thanks foxfish, much appreciated. They look ideal, I'll have to find a way to run it off the mains. Or I guess I re-think the water container. I'm surprised these pumps aren't more common.

Well after hours of google being my friend and looking to see what alternatives were available to the pump linked above. I've found a pump that can be used both immersed and inline and it's only £22 :) so for anyone else that may find this type of pump useful here's the link.

I'm surprised there's not more people finding a need for these type of pumps.

These type of pumps are very popular mate, used by untold numbers of folk who use sumps or external marine skimmers, realtors etc.
The one you are looking at only has a 6' head though, that means it wont pump any water out if you held the pipe up at head level!
Why cant you syphon the water out the window through a hose pipe & then use a hose pipe straight from a tap to refill?

Hmm life is never simple :) I live in a rented house in the middle of town so nowhere out side to syphon the water to. No garden or open drains to use. Taking the water out isn't really an issue its the filling part I'm trying to make easier. Carrying 10l buckets upstairs is a PITA, I can't attach hose pipes to the taps I have so a larger container is my only option. Also doesn't filling straight from the tap require using massive amounts of dechlorinator, enough for the whole tank water volume?

I thought these were different to the the regular pumps you see in sumps etc. as they can also be used inline with 2 pipes attached (you just remove the cover over the intake) and surely the pump in a sump has to lift the water from floor level back to tank height?

The hx 8810 that I'm looking at states a lift height of 1.95m which would be more than enough for my tank.
