Brown diatoms?

Hi all,

I have a 12 litre cherry shrimp tank, with jbl proscape plant soil, some hottonia palustris, and plantings of dwarf hairgrass. Dimensions in inches: 12x8x8

Filtered by a 250lph hob (x20 turnover), no heater, no co2, and lit by a 4w led as seen below:

I found after the first week or so, that the ammonia leaching from the soil cycled the tank, reading no ammonia, no nitrite; and 20ppm of nitrate.

I've changed water regularly since then, and added small amounts of liquid fertiliser. In the past week or so though, I've encountered brown diatoms? Basically fluffy brown stuff around the rock, and browning on the dwarf hairgrass.

The light period is admittedly usually at least 8 hours a day.

To avoid this problem, should I be reducing the lighting period? Or is it an abundance of plant nutrients? the only tank inhabitants are 6 cherry shrimp, I'll try to get a photo when i'm back home later.

Thanks

Hi,

I'm having the same problem and have a post up about it.

The brown diatoms are mostly present in new tanks.
I wouldnt worry to much at this stage. I would however reduce your light to 6 hours and see how that goes.
