Hi all,

This brown algae has appeared on my plants.

My setup is as follows
Aquael 11w florescent tube with Co2 injection along with dosing liquid carbon daily and iron and plant fertiliser once weekly.

My lights are on from 5pm till 10:30pm and my Co2 comes at 3:30pm till 9:30pm and the Dc is always green.

Any ideas on why I'm getting this brown algae?

Many thanks in advance

So it's not to much light or anything like that then? I'll get some today then.

Sweet 🙂 would nyoke recommend having the light on longer? I've got amazing plant growth at the minute though

Possibly Diatoms. Can you wipe them off easily with your finger?

I've not tried yet but it looks like I can. Its not like the BBA. I'll have a look when I get home from work and let you know. What causes diatoms?

Not sure anyone knows what causes them?? silicates have been implied but never conclusively proven in aquarium situations. They are almost a rite of passage with new setups unless you are an expert.

From what I read - just my thinking without looking deeper, please correct me if needed - is that diatoms usually appear in newer tanks during the cycle. That must mean it enjoys the presence of ammonia, nitrite and/or higher nitrate levels perhaps? Algae usually occurs when there is an imbalance of some sort - whether it be nutrients, co2 or light. It seems like your light period is fine - so I'm going to suggest that you may want to reduce your dosing by 1/2 if you are doing any.

Yeah I dose 3ml iron and 3 ml profito a week and just under a Mil a day of liquid carbon plus the Co2 injection from my FE (times above)
