Bodged biorb pump - bad idea?

I’ve reused the pump from my old, old biorb to power a little sponge filter. The flow’s too powerful, so I poked a couple of tiny holes in the airline tubing.
This seems to have done the trick, but will this knacker the pump? Just worried it’s designed to work with more resistance. I don’t mind if it reduces lifespan, as long as it won’t go on fire or anything.

It's won't hurt the pump, but might not be good in the case of back siphoning.

If you want to reduce the flow, just tie a knot in the airline.
