This is what I thought, though on watching some videos of courtship and mating some of the females are barred too 🙈 and apparently the ventral fins are the best way to sex them… but I have no idea 😂😣
Hey @Jenni are you actively trying to breed these? Their fry won't be likely to survive with other fish in the tank. You'd need to remove the parents from my experience, the parents predate on the fish as soon as they're free swimming, and by free swimming I mean, no longer an egg.
If you've got a dedicated breeding set up, you should get fry really quick. I believe aged aquariums are best for small fish breeding, so for this, I keep a 100l aquarium in the greenhouse with lots of leaf litter in. it's covered with a mesh to keep out bugs, when I set up a tank for spawning I take a handful, if not more of these leaves and dump them in the breeding tank. I've never had this much success with raising fry, than I'm having now with slightly decomposing, mulmy leaves.
I’d like to try and breed them, I have 2 tanks I can move the parents from and to - but having trouble knowing if it’s 2 males or a pair at the moment. Swinging back to 2 males as I caught the “female” slightly coloured up today in the first photo - second is the known male 😣
