Hello folks,

I wanted to share my dedicated betta setup here. I had something close to a biotope in mind with this. Pallifinas come from varied water enviroments ranging from stagnant peat swamps to clear flowing waters. What I aimed for is moderately acidic setup with a bit of flow. These are large bettas with a good appetite, so I felt the need for a good filtration system and ample of vegetation to maintain water quality. I have added lots of katapa, teak leaves in there to create acidic environment.

This is the mommy pallifina, quite monster she is at over 4" in length

Obligate predators, they can stay locked on a target patiently, slowly and carefully making a move towards it until the prey is hunted down or moves away from the spot

Thanks for reading my post.
Looking forward to know your views on this setup..

They first spawned on 1 december I guess, and they spawned again yesterday.
Male is still quite inexperienced to hold the eggs yet, poor female is collecting the eggs and chasing the male around to take the brooding responsibility(paternal mouthbrooder, dad does the job here) but male totally ignores after job is done :bored:

Took some pictures, but couldnt fint time to post earlier.

The spawning process is pretty slow, it goes on for the whole day, female releases 4-5 eggs in each embrace and there are a lot of mock attempts within the cycle.

Poor female collected the eggs male spat out and when male ignored it, the eggs got gulped ;)

Heres the main guy, quite a transformation he has undergone is past few days. Hes a bit shy and quite energetic, very difficult to take decent shots of him...

Hi,

Heres the video update

These are literally very crazy fish, for a betta(atleast in my view). Not at all shy unlike a lot of wild types, always very curious and energetic(powerful swimmers and jumpers) even to jump out to grab stuff. o need to keep a tight fitting lid on top there - pretty much you can say a dwarf channa with a short dorsal.

Heres a video to give an idea of how crazy they are...

Fantastic! My simplex are a bit like that. I hold a cube of freeze dried tubifex and they will come up and grab it. I like the colouration of these.

Congratulations!

& thanks for the update, I completely missed this when it was first posted - any chance you can repost some of the photos? most are missing for me (I can see video links & spawning embrace)
