Hi all,

I'm looking to make a fake tree out of some kind of Moss attached to an upturned root.

I really like to look of Phoenix Moss, but it seems quite hard to come by, so I was considering alternatives... preferably low tech is possible.

Any suggestions of something nice and where is best to buy it would be great.

thanks,

G

Really depends, what appearance you wan, for your tree.
My first suggestion would be weeping, snce this creates a thick, overhanging crown on your tree.
I've done just under 50 different species on tbis exact way - trying their capability to mimic trees......
Mick.

Thanks for the reply 🙂

I tried to get Phoenix moss, but my lfs only had Java Moss so I have tried that, but this weeping moss sounds ideal!

Looks nice - and good old javamoss does work nicely for this purpose. You can trim it into becoming more dense and compact. Has the added bonus of being able to attach to the wood easily 🙂

Thanks 🙂

A fair bit of the moss looks kind of brown in colour, should I try to trim this off? Will it turn good eventually or are those parts past it?

Cheers,

G

Brown is not a good colour for mosses - yellow parts will often grow back, but brown parts are dead. You can trim it away.

Doh! most of the brown stuff is under the green! If I get shrimps will they eat it?
